stem cells coaxed into killing cancer cells

Post by werldhed »

Yet another recent happening in the world of cancer treatment and stem cells (it's been a little while since the last one). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get ahold of the primary article, so I don't know how sensationalized this is, but if I get ahold of it I'll post it. Here's the news release instead.

This seems like yet another step forward for showing that stem cells really do have potential. Just as importantly, it addresses a new approach to treating cancers of the immune system. A lot of new breakthoughs in cancer treatment have seemed to be lacking in this area, but this might prove viable. Of course, we'll have to wait for patient studies to know for sure, but it sounds like animal model tests are already being set up, so the data must be pretty good.

I've chatted with the lead investigator before about stem cell development of white blood cells. I even considered working in his lab, but decided against it. Perhaps I'll have to give that a second thought...
