in some meterial's it will actually induce strength by polishing it, it will "Rework" the grain and allow beter aheasion of the metal partical's..

i learned this the hardway when it came to Fiberglass/Aluminum.

if you google "rub out finish" it like another example of a kind of hardening through polishing with mineral spirits

i like doing it to guitar necks

Well polishing cleans the surface, so you don't have any crap inbetween surfaces and if you are bonding with heat then it aids in capillary action.
