I'm thinking of getting some webspace
I'll probably put a site on it at a later date, but I don't have the time to build one now, at the moment I'm just sick of having to delete stuff from my 60mb ISP space in order to put new stuff up.
Any recommendations?
I only need about 200mb, but the possiblilty of upgrading it would be nice. I'd rather not be limited to bandwidth, and just pay a set price if at all possible.

I doubt I'll need php/sql stuff, if i do put a site on it, I won't be needing forms and stuff, simple flash and html should suffice.
There's not much point in getting a domain name for the moment, I'll just use the ip and if i do put a site on it then I'll worry about that later. Out of interest, how much do they cost?

Are you just using it to host images or more complex stuff?
For simple file/video/image hosting, imageshack and rapidshare will usually do the trick.
if you need a tangible website I might be able to find a way of sectioning off my ISP space.. I've got like 1Gb unlimited band...

Just images, music + videos etc. There's a site on it as well, but only a flash linking to a couple of videos (http://www.swilliams.tk should link to it)
Imageshack limits you to 1mb doesn't it? plus I'd rather be able to manage stuff and keep it in order.
Depending on the cost, I'd rather have my own space, that way if anything goes wrong it's my own fault, or I fuck anything up or something stops working, it's up to me to manage it and I don't have to rely on anyone else :lub:.
In a few months or so I'm doing a business studies module, instead of fucking about and making Publisher Wizard business cards, I thought I'd make a proper website to prostitute myself, so I'm thinking ahead a bit, but for now I'd just like to get a decent space up and stop pissing about with ntl.

No, because I'm doing a BA in an art college which a subsidery of the university they seem to think that art students don't know anything about technology. The college is tiny and they can't even sort their own connection out, nevermind one for students, the technician told me that they lease from a completely different university and they're not even connected to JANET. It's a pretty sorry state of affairs really, I'm student rep and it's all I ever bring up at the retarded board meetings I get forced to go to.

That's about £6 a month, which isn't bad at all, there are a lot of things that I doubt I'd use in the programming list, i dont even know what some of them are, but it's nice to know they're there. They do email addresses too which I hadn't thought about, which isn't a bad idea.q4aholic wrote:www.phpwebhosting.com

Can they redirect/send a copy to web based email addresses as well as pop3 ones?Email aliases allow you to receive mail @yourdomain.com but not need to worry about setting up and checking yet another email account. With email aliases, an address at your domain (webmaster@yourdomain.com for example) will automatically be redirected to your existing POP3 email account.

as far as i know it doesnt differentiate from emails....when an email comes into an email on the webspace the webspace just tells it to be sent somewhere else (ie whatever email you tell it too)
also, even most "web based mail" is a pop3 account that you can use a program to check as well, or the web based client they provide, both hotmail and gmail are relative pop3 accountd)

buy a server, put FreeBSD on it.
http://www.freebsd.org/
Tell your ISP to open up all ports for you.
Then use a router yourself to protect your own computers form the interweb.
Set up FreeBSD to host your own webbie.
There you go, now you are in like flin.
