Creative Sound Blaster Audigy unified series Beta driver with OpenAL support 2.08.0002
SBA2-BETAD-W1-LB

This beta driver is recommended for gamers who want full OpenAL™ support for their audio devices.

This was released 9/21/05. Anyone know if this is needed for Q4 to get all the sound benefits?

Yep! This gives you superior sound especially for surround sound

I have quite good onboard sound, is this OK for Q4, or do I need to get an audigy card?

These drivers help a lot. Without them, obviously, turning on OpenAL lags your system to high hell. Installation of these drivers allow for OpenAL to be turned on without an FPS hit and provides more positional audio.
