software dvd players

Post by Dr_Watson »

k... the copy of powerdvd that came with my burner has awlays been kinda clunky and irritating.
and now its probably getting kinda old, and time to replace it.
i figured i'd get some opinions on currently available dvd player software, before I go looking around and doing research of my own.

so, what does everyone like?
anything free thats as good as the commercial offerings?

Out of all the ones I played with, WinDVD had the best video playback.

EDIT: 2 of the worst ones where PowerDVD and nvDVD.

I quite like videolan player/vlc, but YMMV. Bear in mind this is more for the Mac/Linux fags.

i could never get windvd to actually play a disc, and powerdvd v7 was jittery. so far, nothing has been better than my powerdvd4 oem.

you could try real player for dvds. it's free, and it even handles subtitles. allegedly.

umm... mplayer2 doesn't do dvds
while media players will open the VOB files, they don't do menus and such like proper dvd software will.

hmm... apparently i'll just have to take the shotgun approach; grab a bunch and see which one works the best on my pc.

Does on my mac, as far as I can remember.

Great thing about mplayer and vlc is that they ignore those fucking annoying legal notices at the start of DVDs.
