Doom 3, should i?
Doom 3, should i?
Q4 is about here, and i upgraded my entire system because of it :icon27: but anyway, this means i'll have an opportunity to finally play Doom 3. but i've heard SO many mixed reviews on it - i'm not sure if i should bother. i'll wait till i get some Q4 (SP and MP) under my belt tho.
i loved D1 & D2 but i'm looking for some input here. what do you think?

I thought it was a pretty decent game. If you're not bothered by monster closets and slightly predictable spawn-monsters-in-room-when-you-pick-up-the-armor situations then it's quite entertaining. Turn down the lights, make sure no one disturbs you and put the volume up loud.
edit:
the opening scene when "all hell breaks loose" should become a classic moment in gaming history IMO. I thought it was awesome.

The SP was good.. actually a little scary too, for a while. It did get a little bland and predictable after a while, but what SP game doesnt?
Most of the bad reviews were due to the game not living up to unreasonably high expectations. Now that we have all gotten over that and can look at the game with a little more perspective, its actually a solid game, certainly worth picking up.

I got to the Delta Labs and just couldn't force myself to continue anymore. I think it has more to do with the way I play rather than the outdated rig I play it on
However, I have to say the game is quite uninspiring, and I suppose I could really force myself to finish it if it weren't so long. I might still finish it someday (probably when I get a new rig), but I wouldn't bet on it

well, this is all more positive than i expected - but what i need (and hoped for).
part of the reason i didn't buy the game when it was released was because i knew i'd have to tweak the living sh!t out of my ol' rig to possibly make D3 work - and that would ruin it for me. i wanted to be able to enjoy it. glad i waited. with Q4 and D3 this winter won't be so bad

AI is terrible, maps are boring, graphics are pretty meh - cleverly done but lousy design. Worth a couple of goes, but not a great game. If you play D3 and then run through a couple of levels of Doom2, it's pretty obvious which is the better game....
Oh, and Eraser, the start of the game is fricking Half-Life, ffs.

it is actually. at least, in my opinion. the sp was boring, the whole comm center stuff shouldve been MUCH shorter.R00k wrote:Just because it was a little disappointing doesn't mean it isn't worth buying for the SP game. :icon14:
after i got back from hell, i was like "oh god, not this shit again. more grey labs".
RoE didnt do much for me either. i just didnt have the patience for it to get *fun*

I still haven't finished doom3. I'm some way into hell as of a couple of months ago, killed a bunch of hellknights and imps, saved, then another two hellknights appeared. Then I was like ' oh fuck, more hellknights in the same small area and I'm on low health. CBA ' *Quit*. But mostly because I have a bunch of other games to play, including HL2 ( still not unwrapped). I will get stuck back into it though, because it is fun. This is the longest I've ever kept a game going considering I started it well over a year ago.

I've heard a lot of people say that. I bought the game drunk in Edinburgh during the international Games festival in 2004. I havent even played a couple of hours worth yet I find it that boring.
I dunno, Metallic dark corridors and puny sounding weapons with generic monsters just dont cut it for me.
I loved the fast pace of the original by the way AND the fact that I could actually see what I was doing.
Doom3 isnt a game, its a benchmark tool and an engine.

A doom3 mod/SP level for anyone interested in checking it out. ( o'dium )
Can't imagine it's that good if it's only 11mb but who knows.
