Video cards

Post by corpse »

Is there a big difference between a X800Pro and a X800 XL. Both are 256MB RAM.

Or, an Invidia equivalent?

There is so much to read on the subjuects, I get confused and don't know who to beleive

AND, I've got an 9800Pro right now. Will either of these make a huge difference in playing Quake 4 or Doom 3?

If you want Quake 4 or DooM 3, get an nVidia card. How much can you spend?

(And there is a big difference between the X800 Pro and XL, the Pro is either 8 or 12 pipelines, I forget and the XL is 16. I don't know about clock speeds, they might be different too)

Sorry, are a lot of pipelines good or bad?

Can you name a good invidia card for a reasonable amount

Reasonable totally depends on your financial situation. Name a price.

< $200 = 6600GT
<$300 = 6800GT
$300-400 = 7800GT (big jump in performance with this card)
>$400 = 7800GTX

But if you'll be playing more than Quake 4 and Doom 3, ATi has lots of good options too.

Whatever you do go with a nVidia card for now, they are currently beating most of the benchmarks.

This would mean that the XL is better than the Pro??

The Pro is quite a bit more money.

And the system requirements fro Quake 4 listed on the link from Foo lists the 9700, but not the 9800 Pro which I currently have. The 9800Pro must be much better than the 9700?

the 800xl is quite a bit better than the 6600gt. it's more geared to compete with the 6800gt.

Not from what I had read. I really like ATI and all but facts are facts, Nvidia has the best cards out right now and have since the 6x series was released.

Unless hes dropping 400+ on a video card, Nvidia, is where its at..

And ATI isnt exactly WTFPWNING nvidia on high end either..

Your a fucking fanboy, stop giving advise..

If ATI is your preference I'm not knocking you for it shad. I respect your opinion and all but I have found that the numbers show that (right now at least) Nvidia's product line is holding up better. Maybe that will change in time for my next major upgrade (in fact, I hope it does) but that remains to be seen.

Edit: Keep it civil guys, this is an alright thread and I don't want to lock it.

If you're not going to be constructive, take it to another forum eh?

If you think you have a valid point, back it up with links to comparisons, benchmarks, and such.

EDIT: That's to both soap and shad.

this is what he said, i responded, retarded typical nvidiot fanboi soap blasted me for suggesting he buy the x800xl over the 6600gt.

you both are wrong and tormentus was even in a bit of a hurry to defend nvidia. why?

Wrong, right. It's all immaterial until someone shows some evidence.

I personally think you're right, but Corpse would be unwise to trust either side until those magical facts and figures show up.

Because ATI dropped the ball shad. The numbers show that in any number of reviews and I recently read a ton of them before picking up my new card.

Right. You've got a 9800 right now so I'll assume that's AGP, and you're not about to change your motherboard.

TH's latest AGP card roundup shows the two cards being discussed (assuming this 'mod' works as stated) stacking up as follows:
Radeon X850 XT PE
Memory: 256MB
Clock: 540
Memspeed:1180
Pipelines: 16
Bus:256bit

GeForce 6600 GT
Memory: 128MB
Clock: 500
Memspeed: 900
Pipelines: 8
Bus: 128 bit

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... 512mb.html

it's so not even close there is no benchmarks with the x800xl and the 6600gt.

it compares to the 6800gt, and does not get OMGNVFANBOI owned by it either.

i mentioned the mod earlier because i've done it myself on a few other cards. it may or may not have been worth mentioning.

you forgot to throw the x800xl in there wich he said can be had for the same as the 6600gt.
