i thought the movies were fun, the characters were interesting, the world was engaging and detailed, the scenary was nice, the music was well done, the acting was superb, the direction was good, and the story for the most part was nice.
but above all else the movies were just fun and enjoyable to watch. they are great adventure movies.
i dunno - indiana jones is an example of great adventure. LOTR was just...
blaah - i dunno - didn't really engage me maybe that's why - i didn't find it exciting - i didn't get absorbed in the story at all - no suspension of disbelief or whatever -
i just knew i was watching a movie the whole time - not like movies that actually engage you and make you forget you're watching a movie.
But that's probably also due partially to the viewer - i've never read LOTR so maybe i wasn't primed...
The LOTR movies don't step to the books but no movie ever does. They were, however, a reasonably accurate depiction of the book and were quite entertaining IMO. They're definitely in my top 10 favorite movies list.

a dune trilogy of all 6 novels would be brilliant, but i wouldn't pick jackson to do it. not sure who i *would* pick but jackson's not the right choice
saw a little bit of the tv series. the guy playing gurney halleck was some sort of 'not actor', like they'd brought him in for his specialised ability to 'not act'. you could've shot a railroad spike through the fuckers foot and he still wouldn't yell out convincingly.

what a convincing argument
$300m *was* a modest sum for a trilogy stuffed full of SFX and a huge cast with a gajillion props and sets. how much do you think the 2nd star wars trilogy cost?

P.H. Moriarty
he was fucking terrible. alec newman was pretty i thought, and got better in CoD. i thought his preacher was pretty good, given the quantity of dodgy prosthetics on his face
james mcavoy i rather like too, and alice krige made a good jessica, though nowhere near as good as francesca annis, who seemed to have that bene gesserit poise in spades. steven berkoff made a good stilgar but again, not as good as everett mcgill
oh yeah, lol @ that guy who played dr kynes in dune, then came back bald as korba in CoD "Aye deemand to be jerdged bah fremen low!"
