See, Total Overdose is unmistakably game, largely thanks to running around a press release archive with its mouth wide open, and won't exactly win any design awards (although, saying that, Big Mutha Truckers did so who bloody knows), and we probably shouldn't encourage them by buying it, but if you happened to be sitting at home one evening, bored off your tits, and feel like lying on your tummy with a stupid grin splattered across your face, you could probably do worse than to rent it out - even if it is basically that "Kill all the Haitians" line from Vice City done up as an entire game. Totally.
6/10

If I had a nickel for every review that DIRECTLY COMPARES GTA TO TOTAL OVERDOSE I'd retire to some tropical island with hordes of hooker slaves.
Get over the "free roaming" isn't as good as GTA bullshit...it's not a fucking sequel to San Andreas.
I read a review that spent two pages comparing us to GTA with regards to our roaming gameplay and then - in one small paragraph - talks about story missions and on-foot combat...our core gameplay.
It makes me want to write a review about GTA that DIRECTLY COMPARES GTA TO TOTAL OVERDOSE but focuses on the GTA's shitty on-foot gameplay and then I'll mention - in a small paragraph - that "oh yeah...you can jack cars and do free roaming n shit".
First impressions are lasting I guess. I just wonder if people actually review games for what they are or what the reviewer wanted them to be compared to "Game X".
Fuck it. Judge it for yourself.

i posted something about how this game as more "cartooney fun" (with the dynamic music, over the top jump attacks and multikill combo bonusses) as opposed to "mature fun" like GTA is, but q3wbb decided to give me a 404 ;(

kinda. its ok to make comparisons but not as a reason to give it negative points.DooMer wrote:Aren't real reviews supposed to avoid directly comparing products?
that eurogamer review seems ok though
IGN gives it an 8.0
their entire review is based on the fact that its a 3rd person action shooter, with a side order of exploration. more max payne than GTA, pretty much. fun :icon14:Total Overdose is a very fun, albeit short, action title. There's a whole lot to like within the game's control scheme and the gun battles that it'll allow you to carry out. A plethora of bullets, explosions, bloodied bodies and the like are the norm for the game's fight scenes, almost in a choreographed manner.
The game's exploration elements are a little underwhelming, partly do to the fact that the vehicles aren't really all that fun to drive. It's also quite linear, though that hasn't really hurt many other titles in the past. On the flip side though, it's overall style makes up for some of these lackluster elements.
While Total Overdose may not be the most original, deep or serious game to hit a console, the game benefits in many ways from being the exact opposite. Its proven gunplay, in-your-face action and witty sense of style make Total Overdose a game that deserves at least a quick play through.
