im going straight to hell
r u proud to be an american?
Funny that a picture like that gets a laugh from the same hypocritical bunch of folks that get their shit in a twist over the supposed pics of soldiers standing over mutilated bodies and how terrible it is...
hypocrisy++.
but at the same time predictable. It's all about sympathizing with the most popular group of victims at the time...laugh at birth defects.., pity the muslim citizens, etc....
wasn't it goof that posted the pic laughing about how dumb the british soldiers are (the pic with the guy on fire...)?

If I had to guess, I'd guess you'll take this observation and now apply it to everyone who objects to the pictures.tnf wrote:Funny that a picture like that gets a laugh from the same hypocritical bunch of folks that get their shit in a twist over the supposed pics of soldiers standing over mutilated bodies and how terrible it is...
Prejudice, Ego and Cynicism just goes back and forth between people irrespective of the argument.

I should have been more specific...I just find it hypocritical that pics making fun of people with horrible disabilities, mental retardation, etc., seem to be good for laughs, but we all turn our heads in collective disgust at the actions of soldiers who were laughing at dead bodies...losCHUNK wrote:edit: i see 2 posts laughing at that pic

and foo -
I'll apply my argument to the majority of folks who won't post, but seem to get a kick out of the pic of the baby with no arms but will give themselves a pat on the back for jumping on the "look at those disgusting Americans laughing over the brutalized bodies of Iraqi's...now where's a pic of a retard for me to laugh at?"
think i understand you.... but i dont think i seen the thread with the dead bodies and laughing soldiers and i wasnt laughing in the burning soldier thread eithertnf wrote:I should have been more specific...I just find it hypocritical that pics making fun of people with horrible disabilities, mental retardation, etc., seem to be good for laughs, but we all turn our heads in collective disgust at the actions of soldiers who were laughing at dead bodies...losCHUNK wrote:edit: i see 2 posts laughing at that pic

yea foo, believe that.Foo wrote:...and you know who those people who aren't posting are?
Because without knowing who they are, how many of them, then you're creating a handy phantom to justify your stance.
there aren't any. I guess I don't have my finger on the pulse of this community and their tendencies quite like you do.
phantom justification...jesus christ we have 5 years plus of posting histories to look at....apparently, though, not finding any humor whatsoever in a baby with no arms has offended you...

you implied that those folks aren't out there, and we both know they are, because we both know this community well enough to know that a pic of a retarded/disabled kid will get a lot more laughs and less upheaval than someone saying "hey everyone lets laugh together at this pic of american soldiers abusing someone."Foo wrote:I don't think turning it around to accuse me of that works, since I didn't express a view on "the pulse of this community and their tendencies"
I wouldn't single out this community, is the thing. I don't think it's any more prevenant here than in any other part of society, if you adjust for the demographic here of course.tnf wrote:you implied that those folks aren't out there, and we both know they are, because we both know this community well enough to know that a pic of a retarded/disabled kid will get a lot more laughs and less upheaval than someone saying "hey everyone lets laugh together at this pic of american soldiers abusing someone."Foo wrote:I don't think turning it around to accuse me of that works, since I didn't express a view on "the pulse of this community and their tendencies"

in any case, there's a big difference between "look ma, no arms due to a birth defect" and "look ma, no arms due to them being blown off by an american cluster bomb in a war for greed and power". neither are terribly funny, but they are terribly different

Not true, I was laughing at both of them.
I couldn't browse that site from work yesterday, so I checked it out when I got home. There's a few pix of a failed suicide bomber that are so surreal they're hilarious. Especially the wide shot of bits of said "martyr" splattered over two stories of a nearby building.
The gory pictures and the soldiers grinning at them don't bother me. I can't say I'd do anything different in a combat zone. What I found disturbing was the vast amount of retards trying to justify the pictures whenever someone criticized them. Talk about an erupting volcano of stupidity.
The other fucked up thing was seeing so many pr0n images interspersed amongst the gore. THAT'S truly fucked up.

I didn't blow the baby's arms off and then laugh about them being gone, then imply that all babies' arms should be blown off, which is the behavior I was criticizing.tnf wrote:Funny that a picture like that gets a laugh from the same hypocritical bunch of folks that get their shit in a twist over the supposed pics of soldiers standing over mutilated bodies and how terrible it is...

And for what it's worth, I still felt bad for laughing at the picture. Even though I have no way of knowing if that is a real baby with that condition, or if it's just a photoshop job like every other forum-joke-jpeg that gets posted.
Either you completely misunderstood the point I was trying to make, or you're lashing out at me because of some generalization you've made about me, because my stance isn't what you described.
And for the record, I don't think there's anything funny about dead or deformed people, but I admit have had quite a few guilty laughs throughout my life at off-colored jokes about such things because they struck me funny -- not because I thought it was funny that a baby was born deformed. I don't think that necessarily makes me a bad person or a hypocrite.

You have to develop a real callousness to kill people on a daily basis anyway. But the grinning thumbs up, and captions like "this is what all Iraqis should look like," seems to go a little beyond a self-defense mechanism.
That's the part that is sick, and is making us to look like savages to every other country in the world when they hear about these things.
Sorry, I missed this before. I didn't really think this was new - I mean, we've all heard the stories from Vietnam. I'm just making the point that pictures of our troops acting this way is what is making us look like a country of savages. I'm not claiming that we deserve that reputation either.
I did say that it's sad that they seem to be enjoying it so much, because I do think it's sad. I know that's judgemental, because I've never been in the situation myself (and I admit I don't understand it), but I can't just accept it as normal simply because I'm not familiar with the circumstances.
I have a good friend who served as a paratrooper in Afghanistan. He's back over here now, and he's completely different. When we go out to bars together, he always gets in fights. One time I came out of the bar, and he had a guy on the sidewalk, with his thumb hooked in the dude's cheek, about to rip the guy's face apart.
I think that's pretty fucking sad too. He does things like that when he's drunk, and then just a few minutes later he might be crying like a fucking baby.
So yea, I think all those things are sad, but that doesn't mean I'm attacking the soldiers for doing it. I just think the whole situation is sad, and what it does to people is sad.
And maybe that makes me a dirty, hippy liberal. I don't know and I don't really care, to be honest. But it's really fucking sad that right-wingers attack people who feel that way, and even people who have family members in the military agree with them. That's the ultimate brainwashing to me.
And I know you weren't attacking me, NS; that wasn't directed at you.

the issue here isn't about them being different - the bottom line is that it is selective sympathy for tragedy based on what bandwagon one feels like being on.
For example - folks posted pics making fun of the Katrina victims here...the black guys with the watermelons in the shopping carts, etc, all with laughs abounding....
If I were to post pics making fun of Iraqis who had fell victim to a bomb, whatever, folks would shit in their hats...
Just explain to me - why is it ok to laugh at a baby with no arms, or to laugh a mentally retarded kid running in a race, or whatever, but completely out of line to make jokes about other tragedies?
I work with kids that face those types of challenges every day, and deal with the pricks who make fun of them too, and the bottom line is - kids with problems like that who make it to school every day despite the comments, laughing, etc., have more nuts than the collective lot of the folks who do PS jobs to get a quick laugh at their misfortune.
this isn't about the difference between being born with no arms and being blown up by an American soldier. It's about why it is OK to laugh at one, but not about the other.
