I'm going to be upgrading my video card (AGP) shortly before Q4 is released mid october. I had a few questions for what I should look for in a decent card.
I read from many sources that the quake-con computers were P4 3.0ghz, 2Gigs of ram and a 6800Ultra. and it was running the game very smooth with pleasing graphics.
So far I decided I should get a video card which has '16 Pixel Pipelines,' DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3 support.
Now not many AGP cards have these specs but there are a few..$200-$280 range.
This will be my last upgrade to my system for a long time now. I'll be lucky to get a new video card for christmas and I'll be buying Q4 when its released.
Looking for advice or suggestions. It seems Nvidia runs Quake better than ATI, cuz i belive it uses openGL technology. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Yeah something like an Nvidia 6600 or 6800 GT card will run the game fine (and these are reasonably priced). That is however if the other hardware components in your pc are up to snuff.
Wait until it comes out, and then see whats the best around and what you can afford. By that time the 7800GT's would of probably come down in price a tad
Quake 4, for MP at least, will be lower spec than Doom 3 due to the way its lit its levels. Levels are fully ambient lit with smaller point lights around light sources. This is why there seems to be a lack of shadows most of the time in screenshots, and shadows look very small or short.
