A co-production between HBO and the BBC, ROME is one of the largest co-production deals ever by the BBC for an American series, and marks the first series co-production of the two networks. HBO and the BBC previously partnered on the 2001 miniseries "Band of Brothers," which won six Emmy® Awards, including Outstanding Miniseries.
I just watched the first two episodes and they owned, a lot. It hasn't over indulged itself with excessive battle scenes, neither has it been overly complicated with the politics behind everying. The costumes, props, sets and acting is great, as is the pace.
It's full of prostitutes, rude graffeti, raping, pillaging, bad medicinal practices and general nasty behaviour, so I suppose it does draw parallels, but not in an obvious "WE'RE MAKING A STATEMENT" way.

It's "as is". They're not trying to do anything more than provide the viewer with an entertaining show that is historically accurate (with a few liberties taken), but not stereotypical. And they did a fucking superb job of it so far.
The story focuses on several characters from Rome, including Lucius Vorenus, Tidus Pullo, Atia of the Julii, and Caesar to name a few.
Tidus Pullo is my hero.

Admittedly I know very little about Rome, it's emperors and all the politics behind it so I don't know how accurite it really is. It's damn good TV though

An interesting fact about Roman art: they painted fucking EVERYTHING. The walls, the statues, the roads, pottery... You name it, they put paint on it. A very colorful place. You know all those marble statues of theirs we see in movies and stuff all the time? Inaccurate representation, because in Roman time, they were all painted to look realistic.
Another fun fact: the Romans copied all the Greek art, namely the statues, but there are 2 key differences. The first is that they used marble instead of bronze, and the second is that the Romans couldn't figure out how to balance the statues to stand on their own like the Greeks did, so they had to add supports.
I think it's airing the 3rd season in America now, and it may be the final series. Too be honest I'm not too sure as it's not come to UK terrestrial TV yet. The last one here was series 2. I suggest you look into aquiring it, it's one of the best drama things I've ever seen.
