When I saw the headline "Nintendo plans one-handed joypad" on the BBC website, I lawled, and thought of quake3world, for this was the first place I came to, wondering who would be the first to make an all too obvious comment about the sort of game that might best be played with one hand free...

And what do I find? Serious discussion. You people make me sick.

At first I thought the idea was ridiculous, but now i'm thinking it could be interesting. It seems like a good idea, let's just hope more than 5 good non-nintendo games are actually made for the system

ever since the n64 they forced themselves into a niche market by trying to dictate their perverted thoughts on the future of gaming against the wishes of the majority of gamers who rather have progression of massive online gaming with intense graphics instead of magical wand controllers and fairy dust crap
Not all of us have the time or interest to play massive online games (as most people even here who have a social life and career could attest to).

Just seems like a waste of time
Microsoft used this tech in a pad ages ago
and it was also really wank. Not the revolution people were thinking.
Did you watch the demo video?

Also WHEN exactlly did microsoft do this?

That controller makes me and my hands sick. That is simply disgusting, the PS3 controller is better, but it is a boomerang so if I got mad at it and threw it then it would return and prolly hit me cause I sit in a hard to move chair when I game. THe X-Box360 has the only good controller

You're not.
That's not what it was designed for. Either that, or someone will come up with something to do it with the controller.

That's not what it was designed for. Either that, or someone will come up with something to do it with the controller.

which is why i think its a terrible controller.

i wont bother to mention that when im chilling and want to just play a few games i dont want to have to hold the thing up or move it around or whatever.

anyway, i'd rather have a controller that works well for every game rather than a controller that works excellently for just a few games and is really shoddy with others. i think the gamecube controller is an example that can be applied here.

also about the whole plug in GC thing, i wouldn't bank too much on that idea of being a readibly available alternative. there are few reasons why.

(1) nintendo will try very hard to utilize the new controller, not the gamecube controller even if it means that they can make the game better using the GC one.

(2) 3rd party developers wont make that many games for revolution that uses the "standard" GC controller. why? because (a) it further scopes the intended audience (b) nintendo will encourage developers to stick with the new controller.

look at the DS for example. i had written to nintendo about some certain games and whatever else and they responded about how the real test is to see how those games can utilize the microphone and touchscreen.

so the idea is to use the "gimmicky" stuff. in fact, gear your game in such a way so that it will incorporate those functions. i'd rather it be the other way. if the game can be aided by the "gimmicky" stuff then you use it. don't just make something so that you can use the added functions.

also random note: couldnt they have designed a regularish controller with plenty of buttons that does the motion stuff as well?

two thoughts come to mind when seeing it
1)didnt like the botton placement/layout of the GC, felt like it was made for people who only liked to use one botton on everygame.. *shrugs
2)is it just me or are the analog and d-pad's placed a little low on the controller? I'm imagining that to use them you would have to bend your thumb quite a distance downward and abit angled to use them effectively which is also looks like a bit of a gap between the bottons and the 2nd anolog stick..
*shrugs, looks interesting though. I cant wait to try this system out.

Button placement on that unit just above here looks near-identical to the Gamecube pads.

Why not just stick with the N64 controller? That's the best console controller ever made IMHO.

Because that's a preference thing and it's up for debate.

Nintendo will have big testing groups to asses widespread approval of all their products and the controllers will be one of the most important ones.

You can see the transition between the N64 and Gamecube controllers... it's not that extreme. personally I found having to move my hand around on the N64 controller to be a hassle.
