As they forged along, sometimes through calm vastness, yet more often over turbulent peaks and valleys, their days became weeks as many doubters spread fearful rumors about the edge. At last, winged creatures appeared, signifying the journey’s end.

Does anyone know what this means?

It was for an exercise in my SOCS tutorial, apparently only my group was able to figure this out. You are right, however it’s specifically about Christopher Columbus. I just wanted to see if anyone was able to figure it out.

I thought it was quite easy also despite the timelimit, doesn't appear my class is very bright. However it's was not a history class and in fact has little to do with such history so many people couldn't figure this out and it was really funny to hear what they thought it was.
