next superpower
Why do you insist on a comparison between events during 1945 and 1990? Is it because the word superpower was invented somewhere around that time or something?
If tomorrow i think of a new word to discribe an unknown tropical disease that i discovered today, would you argue that people with the exact same symptoms did not suffer from it three days ago?

try this :
by 1921, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 470–570 million people — roughly a quarter of the world's population — and covered about 15 million square miles (nearly 36 million square kilometres), roughly 33% of the world's total land area.
Edit: Being a superpower to a bunch of native tribes isn't that hard, you know. It's when you go against your equals when it counts.
you sir, with all due respects, are a fucking idiot.
thanks for playing.

I was going to explain how a certain term only applies to a certain situation, you know just like putting a -gate behind everything doesn't make it comparable to Watergate, but then I decided it wasn't worth the effort and to go with the surreal answer.Ryoki wrote:Then i am forced to call you an idiot.SplishSplash wrote:yes
Yes a superpower and all should be able to overthrow iraq without a problem and eliminate all resistance. Or doesn't it count because it's not a convential army :icon28:SplishSplash wrote:Edit: Being a superpower to a bunch of native tribes isn't that hard, you know. I do, that's why I disagree with your view. With your view you could also say the soviet union never was a superpower since they didn't hold up untill now.SplishSplash wrote:Survivor wrote: Yes a superpower and all should be able to overthrow iraq without a problem and eliminate all resistance. Think again.

Discussion over, fuck off ShitSplash.Although the term superpower is a recent one, the word has been retrospectively applied by some to previous military powers. The oldest superpower on the planet was the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire covered most of Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor. The Persian Empire once controlled all of Asia Minor, Egypt and parts of India. The short-lived Greek/Macedonian empire under Alexander the Great became one after replacing Persian power. During its Siglo de Oro, the Spanish Empire had possession of Italy, parts of Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, and many colonies in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. At its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the British Empire covered a quarter of the Earth's land area and comprised a third of its population. It was said "The sun never sets on the British Empire."
Not as clearly in this category are nations that gained unquestioned hegemony over a large neighborhood at a time before global travel was a reality. Nations such as ancient Egypt, the Aztec Empire, the Persian Empire, and China could in one sense be considered early superpowers, at least for a time when an understanding of what is meant by "the world" was much smaller than it is today.
The first modern "superpowers" -- although they were not known by that term and are more commonly labeled as "Great Powers" -- arose with the beginning of nation-states which were capable of organizing and enlisting commerce, politics, and standing armies and navies to subdue or control other nation-states and less civilized areas. The Dutch were the first nation-state to do so, followed by the Spanish empire and British empire.
The term "superpower" is most commonly reserved for the post World War II period to reflect the bipolar political division of the world and advances in technology that allowed countries to instantly communicate throughout the world and project tremendous power on a truly global scale.

And Grudge just proved me right in an hilarious attempt to prove me wrong.
I don't know about you guys, but to everyone who can read it looks like I'm winning this one quite easily. Even Grudge acknowledged that by resorting to a lame off-topic comeback.
