Brits, How Much Do You Value Your Rights?
Brits, How Much Do You Value Your Rights?
An article from the BBC.

I've heard a few Brits here say that they would be willing to give up some civil liberties in order to improve security. What do you guys think about this?

Ah yes the BBC, the state controlled public information service for which every household (60 million of 'em) pay a compulsory, 'information tax' of around $200 every year. If you don't pay this, govn't agents can enter your home with the police and if you have a TV set they can put you in jail, although most are fined (around $1,000). How's that for oppression?
Releasing news snippets like this in a vague and non-specific form, is common govn't practice for measuring public responses to proposed new taxes/laws, to see how far they can push before the public would baulk. If it's not well received, then it's back to laying on more levels fear until the public are begging for more oppression! (like some of the responses I read - sheep)
Frankly people are just leaving (in millions). People that have bought and paid for their homes are selling up and getting the hell out of here. There are towns in France where half the population are Brits.
If you have a good 'trade' you go; Hence the shortage of Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Teachers (they'll give you a $10,000 cash advance just to become a teacher).
We do not 'Love' our country

really? so all you're doing here is having a moan, then...Memphis wrote:I'm not particulary politically minded in any sense...
propaganda has done a great mind-job on brits, almost as good as on yanks. fewer and fewer people vote, people are more apathetic and fatalistic and all they do is moan and talk about moving to the med. instead of blaming the people who really run the country (basiclly big business) they're encouraged via (big-business-owned-) media to take it out on asylum seekers or foreigners in general. people complain about how their taxes are being spent on palaces for 'economic migrants' while overlooking the fact that 50% of their taxes are spent on the military, i.e. turning other people's countries into bombed-out shitholes so they'll want to come here and turning the UK into a nation nearly as reviled as the US.
ffs i hear people say americans should wake up. brits could follow the same advice.

exactly - we give an almost inconsequential amount in taxes to support the unemployed and asylum seekers. conversely, we pay an absolute shitload to help fuck those countries up so their people have to seek asylum here.
this statement from the mi5 chap has most likely been taken out of context, hopefully it's not as part of the propaganda drive for id cards (which it most likely is). id cards are one of the stupidest mistakes this country could possible make.
EDS, the company that've fucked up every government contract they've been given, are the ones who'll be handling this id card thing if it happens. it will cost billions and billions of pounds, and it will go overbudget, and it won't work as intended. every uk passport holder will have been given an informational achillies heel and we'll be less secure than ever before.
of course, there's always a slim chance that the tories'll get into power at the next election, in which case things will become much worse.
Re: Brits, How Much Do You Value Your Rights?
back on topic - we don't really have that many rights, not on paper anyway. our government have always had a pretty free hand with security - and we were starting to be able to trust them with that. it's only now that our security is being tested that we're realising there's a problem.R00k wrote:I've heard a few Brits here say that they would be willing to give up some civil liberties in order to improve security. hopefully, enough people will realise that a big part of our security problem is that our government makes people want to attack us and facilitates them doing so. ..but there's a lot of apathetic xenophobia here instead of real patriotism, so it's more likely that new laws will be introduced, more public cash will be haemorrhaged away, and as ppp says, the uk's 'brain-drain' will continue.
