My collection of stupidity

Ok...after reading today I have decided to start keeping a collection of all the stupid shit I hear from students in my college classes. Here are a few gems I've had to read today:

How can energy change forms? My daughter stated it very simply, for anything to happen the transfer of energy has to happen. When turning on your PC the transfer of energy happens to allow us to do so. How is a balloon blown up? The transfer of energy (the helium) transferred into the balloon (the pressure) is how the energy changes the form of the balloon. Temperature also changes energy, water to ice, rain to hail, snow to slush, water to boiling, etc..

While surfing the net I read that the voice you hear inside your head is transferred from sound energy. The sound energy is changed to electrical and chemical signals that travels to a part of your brain for interpretation.

The biggest and most important form of energy I know is the sun. We can't live with out it! We need it to survive. It feeds the ground and in turn the ground feeds us. It is our main light source and we need it to live. It's continually revolving making the energy available to us everyday.

So that's who has been feeding the ground.

The sun is so large it's hard to figure out where does the sun gets it's energy. I am thinking it is sustained from the energy that it gives off where that energy is transferred into a different form of energy which in turn sustains the sun.

It's just a thought....

The 1st law of thermodynamics is probably one of the most important concepts in all of science, it states that in all physical and chemical changes, energy (and matter) is neither created nor destroyed, but it may be converted from one form to another..let's think about what this means...what are some forms of energy?
I would like you to start the thread this week by thinking about how this affects YOU-- you are constantly consuming and converting energy and producing waste (not just your body, but your car, your home, etc.) See if you can find some information about the efficiency of the various types of energy transformations you cause in your daily life and share them with the class...since energy isn't lost, where is it going?

I think the energy is going into the atmosphere which is the cause of the depletion of the ozone layer. I think one efficient type of energy transformation is recycling, also I think hybrid vehicles are helping to reduce how much gas is used thus reducing the damage to the ozone.

A type of energy transformation that I use daily is using the dishwasher. I probably should use the "light" cycle mostly, which I do not, unless I am washing particularly dirty dishes. I would save water, electricity and time.
