Bass recomendations
I'm in the market for a decent Bass and a bass amp. Any suggestions? ~$1000 for the whole thing would be ideal, but i could go up to $1500.

Screw Fender.. yeah, there are some nice P&Js to be had - and yeah, it's got the Fender name (which is not really a big deal) - but they are generally hit or miss (MIA or MIJ doesn't make it good - just ups the chances of it being better than a MIM or MII). The only guaranteed good Fender is a Custom Shop and that's WAY out of your price range.
Also, don't get Stingray. It's a one trick pony. And it's not cool to have one.
Laklands are AWESOME. Conklins are also very good (you can get a 7 string on ebay for ~ $650). Anything Ibanez BTB is also very good. Peavy Cirrus are also very good - but like Fender can be hit or miss. ESP makes great guitars but the basses are meh. SX basses are quite good (cheap!) for the price (get one for $100, spend $200 on some Barts/DiMarzio + JRetro + Baddass and you've got a better bass than a good MIA Fender). Spector Legends (if you like the tone) are probably the best basses you can get for that budget. Warwicks are also good, but $$$ and there's a 50% chance you won't like the tone (it's a love it or leave it kind of bass).
For amp, Ampeg is a household name (get a B15). Eden is very good (Nemesis combo). Mesa Boogie is exceedingly awesome but you can't afford it. Avoid new SWR like the plague - their build quality seems to have gone to $hit in the last 2 years or so.
My recommendation, be practical and get a Behringer 300watt + Steelsound (google it) 2x12 or 4x10. Also, get a Behringer V-Amp (or Line6 pod) for an array of amp/cabinet simulations. That'll get you far enough to start making $$ playing out to pay for higher end boutique gear. Also, anyone who says Behringer gear sucks is a brand-name-can't-play-poser.

I've yet to hear a bass that sounds better than my Fender MIA Deluxe..
I would say get a used MIA Fender. You can grab one on eBay for fairly cheap with money for an amp. There's a shit load of accesories if you need them later on. In your pricerange you'll probably have to go with a combo amp. Ive had good luck with Ampeg combos.

http://www.drstrings.com/ for strings btw..
I'm with BKB. Fenders, when you have a good one, are the greatest basses ever. But it's hard to get a good one (I have/had 4 - only 1 of them I've kept [MIA Pbass Deluxe 5 - going to keep that thing forever].
If you can, do a playtest in person before committing the $. Make sure you like the look, feel and most importantly the sound. And try to playtest w/ headphones on. How it sounds in the showroom is rarely how it sounds once it's home.

Sansamp.. yah, they are really really nice.. you can also use it to preamp a poweramp if you're a rackmount type (Sansamp RBI).Geebs wrote:I got a rather nice active through neck soundgear for about 400 quid, new.
A good alternative to getting a bass amp is the tech21 bass DI box. Absolutely amazing sounds for recording and you can go straight into a PA with it.
Kewlio.. respectable bassists at Q3W.
Depends what your playing, ESP for some classical jazz shit, sure they suck.. but for more "metal" and what not its a great guitar..Geebs wrote:p.s. ESP basses.....

[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.
It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.
