help needed: Playing - not technical

Post by scorpio1 »

Meh, call me an utter noob but i really can't seem to handle the AI bot at nightmare difficulty on Q3DM1:Arena Gate. I mean i get a score of maybe 2, if im lucky, and always lose...

I can barely get a shot off, or when i do the bot has no trouble avoiding it...conversely, i get hit what seems like 100%...you get the idea...

Yes i realise im whining, i'd like to know how much is possible at this difficulty...and really now, modesty aside, im no utter noob, i know my way around FPS games and recently came to this admittedly old game to see how much things have moved on....Only to be stuck wondering 'wtf' as i get mowed down by a bot :icon23:

I really am obsessed about this now, I'm simply interested in your own experiences with the bots in Q3Arena...At nightmare difficulty preferably

And any tips would of course be greatly appreciated.

It just takes a lot of practice and you have to hit every shot.

Undeniably, nightmare bots will be a labor of intense difficulty unless you learn advance strafing and movement techniques.

Move away from the bots field of view, hide behind objects. You can see that, even nightmare bots are very easily susceptible to charging to wards the player and even ignoring rockets spammed at doorways. Use this to your advantage.

Trying a few different combinations of movement/weps to see what'll work- so far only the lucky-rocket-reflex shot :paranoid:

Stick at it, you'll be beating players like me a in matter of days. When I say "players like me", I actually just mean me.

I was bored so I made you a small demo, excuse my twitchy aim. ;)

The .dm_67 file goes into baseq3\demos. If you don't have a demos folder make one. Then while in-game, open the console ~ and type: demo q3dm1_demo1

keep him away from the weapons and armor. On that map, the plasmagun is the best weapon to control. nightmare bots rockets are pretty easy to avoid.

Give him weapons rather. Specially if you want to fight him face to face and not just shoot rockets around corners. The machine gun is a powerful weapon in the hands of people with great aim. And also in the hands of bots of course.

Here is a demo of me doing Q3DM1 on Nightmare!.

http://www.netrexx.net/files/games/Q3A/ ... htmare.rar

Put it in your q3\baseq3\demos folder and start it in console with demo Q3DM1.vs.netrex@Nightmare!.dm_68 and it should play.

Why do you play Xaero on that map? That's not the default bot. And why do you use an old version of Q3? Why not 1.32?

I've always thought Xaero was the toughest on any map TBH... maybe it's not true. :paranoid: I am using the latest version, but I renamed it to .dm_67 in the hopes that the demo would show up in the vq3 demo menu, but it didn't. BTW in case you didn't know, bots play the best in vq3, the osp bots aren't as good. :p

I played vQ3 also ;) But with the default bot on the singleplayer campain thingy. Just changed sv_fps to 125 and maxfps to 145 to get the physics right. Probably should have used sv_fps 145 also.

I found that if you run the singleplayer game on a dedicated server the bots are better, but it might only be my imagination.

I find Major to be the hardest on Q3DM17 and on some maps the bots that aren't there in the singleplayer part are just get stuck and camp etc., so I prefer the default bots really.

if you think "Nightmare" bots are hard, then keep well away from "spiterbot"
dont take Juggers post wrong(which you clearly have) learn to relax when playing, the more you tense up the worse you will play, take a deep breath, go with it, dont fight it, relax and you will find your game will improve, apart from getting more practice in of course ;)

wow, thank you so much! :icon25:

Just getting those demos and will be watching every move you guys make.

Appreciate this a lot- I think i've just gotten used to online play too much...The bot's skill is in face to face encounters, at least that's the most difficult part from my point of view, whereas online you can very much expect for mistakes from opposition and all sorts of other things to use to your advantage.

I just want to defeat the bot at it's own game now, if you see what i mean...A head on duel.

Edit - take the post the wrong way? not at all, maybe the exclamation mark should've had a :p or something after to make my sarcastic comment clear. My fault, really though, no problems, liking all the feedback, keep it up, if you still feel like it of course.
