Playing through Deus Ex 2 again...
And its not actually that bad. Now that I have a system that can run the game acceptably higher than 640x480 and with full detail, its actually quite a good looking game. I also added those custom textures and player skins which makes it even better.
But as for the game itself... well its definately inferior to the original, but its still more immersive than most games out there. And the storyline/plot/characters are still great.
So if you were initially disappointed in the game originally (like me), give it another chance. Its just a shame the chances of DX3 are slim-to-none.

The simplification was definately a bad move. Its been discussed umpteen times before, but the fact that it was joint-released on both PC and console definately hindered it. The original was a PC game in every sense of the word, which was both complex yet accessible thanks to the fantastic interface.
But DX was always about the storyline and the immersion. DX2 carried it over somewhat, but something was definately lost in translation. Still as I say, its definately an enjoyable game, and better than most out there. But DX remains a classic, and it was always going to difficult to match.
