well - ideas (its my means of getting to work and back - c. 60 miles per week in london - and its falling apart like a 100 quid halfords pos - gonna replace soon i think)
hmm .. true - gears and seat and frame are ok (though would like lower (higher - FASTER basically)) gears i reckon - wheels are both already slightly buckled - 5 months old lol - fucking speed bumps - and brakes have always needed tightening one a week (very hilly on my journey) - all the gear is shimano so is supposed to be good i guessFoo wrote:If the Frame is OK you might be better ramping up the components?
Marin are OK, but from what I hear overpriced for what you get.
Mebbe look at specialised if you're still looking in the £400 range. The Hardrock hybrids are nice machines... we've got 2 in the family and both have been solid performers.

Well for the gears, all shimano kit is not created equal.. they peddle some shit alongside their good stuff and stock bikes tend to ship with the shittier kit.neh wrote:hmm .. true - gears and seat and frame are ok (though would like lower (higher - FASTER basically)) gears i reckon - wheels are both already slightly buckled - 5 months old lol - fucking speed bumps - and brakes have always needed tightening one a week (very hilly on my journey) - all the gear is shimano so is supposed to be good i guess
if you're replacing the wheel that gives you the opportunity to alter the gears by choosing a different rear cog... as this is a hybrid bike I would guess the rear cog is smaller than a regular MTB and the front is larger - giving higher gears overall.
As for the brakes, assuming you have V brakes, you could consider a disc (cable operated ones are quite cheap now) or look into a better set of Vs (Shimano XT)
