The most prominent advertising I'm aware of is word of mouth. Especially true for multiplayer games because a bulk of interest comes from online forums and the like.

I can't think of any games I bought as a result of the expensive advertising.... magazine spreads, TV ads, or such.
Don't use yourself as an example. You do not represent the average buyer of computer games. The average buyer is heavily influenced by advertising (and the way the retail business work).
That has nothing to do with getting a game out there. If a game became popular within online circles, that would be a springboard to higher sucess. What I'm pointing out is that the oppotunity is there for it to happen, but it hasn't happened.

then run your monitor at hi-res and just increase the default font size of your browser.

Exactly, it hasn't happened because the market simply isn't there yet. There is no mid-range market, it's all "make it big" or "make it bust".

Obviously you haven't even read the article.

So indie devs. would love to get in the market, but can't because of the roadblocks put fourth before them? Are they happy in spending most of the time in the bargain bin? Well if so that's fine I guess. I just picture most of these games as the 'popcap' style, slightly gimmicky with a quick gratification for the user. Nothing really complicated. Maybe I'm wrong.
