I turned the TV on this weekend and there was this show on VH1 called "The Fabulous Life of Hip Hop Stars." I got sucked into it, watched it, and I would say that if the rest of the media is putting out even remotely similar schlock, then that's where the association comes from. Because the people featured on the show surely own some unnecessary crap. It's like that track off of Chris Rock's latest comedy album says, "P. Diddy paper towels on isle 10 - $300!!"
Edit: P.S. I felt like I lost 20 IQ points just watching the show!
Yeah, I knew I was opening myself up for that comment, but it's kinds true about the media dumbing us down.... I'm just getting tired of the media pushing consumption on us....
My girlfriend likes watching that shit on MTV like "Laguna Beach", I can't fucking stand those shows. Something about idolizing ugly white rich sluts turns me off.

Yeah, they look kinda fake, those girls.... And I hate to put on my tinfoil hat like Geoff, but it's really no C-O-N-spiracy (remember In Living Color?) that we are being diluged with consumerism while we're at war....
