Fucking Hell Google

Post by Foo »

...Google Earth just keeps getting better and better.

The NASA tool doesn't come close to this.

Have you tried turning on the 'buildings' layer and flying around a US city? I was checking out the path of the hurricane due to hit NO later today, but this has really taken me by surprise.

In a few years, there will be games referencing google's map/building data to generate accurate 3d space. That'll be awesome.

Anyway, hyper nonsense post over. Google earth is amazing.

Grand Theft Auto : Google

Though technically it's not Googles program, some other company writes it I think.

If you look at the trans-america pyramid in San Francisco you get a blocky spike that pokes out of the ground. They need to incorporate angled buildings, then it would be really awesome. :D

I think the next step is taking angled sattelite images and mapping them onto the buildings where possible. Of course, they could also take these radar van things they're using and set one up to take images of the buildings as well.

This must be the most significant technological innovation in the last 5 years?

One of the, if not "the". It's definitely phenominal work, and an ingenious concept. It's a great infrastructure on which a bunch of information can be overlayed. :)

The only thing that amazes me about google earth is it's streaming capability... not really even that, but the speed and near seamlessness of the streaming.

If they were able to extrapolate an accruate 3D world, like adding depth to the trees next to the ramp at the bottom of the screen shot, that would be amazing. That would be the only way it could be truly used reliably for game mapping.

most of Melbourne is still blurred sattelite photo with no road info, and anything outside of the CBD and Geelong is a completely nonunderstandable blur with a sharpen filter on top of it.
