HL2 singleplayer..

Oh wait look I'm wrong:
Rawbert Deniro here says 'as you can see, clearly high detail and curvaceous'.
Check it out.. I don't know how that guard can walk straight when he's twisting his ankles on all the curves.
See also the screenshot above, clearly from Quake 1.
I've got news peeps... there is very little detail in real prisons.. what are you looking for, crates? Mebbe some TVs.
I wasn't saying it was unrealistic. Niether was he. I was just pointing out that some people were not understanding what he meant.
edit: wake up on the wrong side of the bed?
am i the only one (apart from geoff, who is trying to be disruptive+doesnt count) that didnt think hl2 was the greatest sp game ever that people make it out to be? i feel like im missing something. I preferred the original and I at least replayed that...I have no desire to replay2 hl2.
i dunno, both games were enjoyable, but i dont rate either as head and shoulders above the other games of the time...

hear hear, my friendseremtan wrote:yes, i take your point. apart from the fact that this shot is set in a prison not an ottoman palace, apart from the hi-res textures, the normal/spec-mapped npcs, textures and phys/static models, the high-def light/shadow and the fact that it's 32 bit not 256 colour, and the high model polycount IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE IN Q1o'dium wrote:Just for you, here. Yes, I'm well aware you couldn't do coast, or the lighthouse, or other places in the Quake 1 engine. Thats why i said some places.
Anyways, while your thinking up your next witty reply as to why this "next gen" shot has so much detail (which has nothing to do with the gameplay, and i never said it did before you bring THAT up), i'll be taking a shit.
sorry mate but i think you prised open this particular can of worms with your own two hands. if you'd said 'some of it's no more detailed than call of duty or MoH' i'd have said 'ok, that's a fair enough point - it doesn't look so hot if you run it under DX8.1 so i can see why someone might think that' BUT NO

I've always found the original hl to be pretty "meh". The crawling though air ducts, those annoying facehuggers, endless searching for switches in underground tunnels without seeing a single enemy, stupid jumping puzzles, and so on. I probably had my standards set too high after playing the action-packed Quake and Quake II.blakjack wrote:am i the only one (apart from geoff, who is trying to be disruptive+doesnt count) that didnt think hl2 was the greatest sp game ever that people make it out to be? i feel like im missing something. half-life 2 on the other hand, was great IMO. Great mix between action and exploration, beautiful (albeit simple) graphics, and a solid and consistent atmosphere in every map. Playing any other reasonably new SP FPS really shows the difference in quality, which IMO is head and shoulders above the competition.

IMO Halflife2 is extremely overrated. It had some very fun parts and a good pace in which story events happened. But I was really pissed about the extreme linear level design and also found many parts really repetitive. Fighting in ruins, fighting in a sewer, then fighting in ruins again and then some more ruins. And they all looked the same, junked up with the same map models all the time.
Another thing I didn´t like was the fact that most of the time there weren´t any objectives or tasks or goals you had to accomplish, it was just dull fighting your way through 90% of the time.

Exploration? There wasn´t any real exploration because every map was build like a long winding corridor with just one direction to go.Grudge wrote: half-life 2 on the other hand, was great IMO. Great mix between action and exploration
Oh, and there were some "secrets" clearly marked with a yellow lambda logo so that even the dumbest player wouldn´t overlook it.

Been a lot of HL lately. I play HL2DM all the time of course, but yesterday I played through Blue Shift. It's a very short game :/ Then I started with Opposing Force. Much more game here, but about the same gameplay. Not done with this yet. I started it before, but for some reason I didn't finish it. I think the reason was Q3
Then I'm gonna play through HL after, cause I actually never did before. Lost my savegames and got too pissed to restart it.

Well, pick up an object and it acts as a shield.

Not true, I didn't find the story page for ages and I was definitely getting some dim glimmers of what the hell was going on by the end of my fourth run through the game.feedback wrote:M2 was better, because the plot was comprehendable without reading all (7777 pages) of marathon.bungie.org/storyGeebs wrote:Marathon Infinity > all

Plus, Infinity had some of the best 2.5d mapping I've ever seen. M2's maps haven't aged as well
