How come none of you are talking about the hugeass hurricane
"Best of luck guys. It may sound evil but I hope the place does get totally fucked over. I'd like to see the reactions it would cause the following people:"
Magnetichead, you are a total fcking retard. I wouldn't wish death and devastation on any region of any country no matter what. I'd like to come and get you, tie you up and drop you right in the path of this hurricane, and you can see for yourself how much fun it's going to be. You haven't got a brain in your head.

Cheers. Confirms the highest total but lowest as a percentage.HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote:http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelate ... sandGraphsFoo wrote:Guess?

but i would question those numbers a little as well. Japan seems to be a bit lower than I remember from when I was working with this stuff.
tho, it could be the 292874629629847 brews I've had since then.
yea, and do wonders for people having to rebuild entire lives and losing everything they have....but you don't want anyone hurt...so its all good.Mr.Magnetichead wrote:Did I say I wanted anyone to get hurt? No. Know why? Because I don't.

the source for the first para is just about every chomsky book i've ever read. the source for the second para is mostly me because that's just my opinion, and the general observation that were a turrurist carbomb to go off in boise idaho it'd be leading news in the UK but when one goes off in baghdad (i.e. almost every day) it isn't. i'm not suggesting that overseas aid is astronomical in europe or anywhere else, just that US aid as a % of GDP is among the lowest and most goes on building israeli settlements in the west bank and some to egypt but i don't know what they spend that on.Dave wrote:Not that I care either way, but do you have a source or are you making it up?seremtan wrote:not even remotely true. Same shit happens here, no one gives a fuck.
please note that i said US GOVT. i've no idea how much ordinary americans give to international charities, but it's fair to say that the US is better placed to deal with hurricanes than bangladesh is to deal with massive floods. it's also fair to say that the "same shit happens here, no one gives a fuck" cuts the other way rather more sharply than it does the way you mean.
well yes i wasn't clear on that, i meant as % of GDP (as i just responded to daev de paatay poopah). obviously the US having such a large economy the dollar amount will be greater. then again, if europe's overseas aid were calculated as a euro total it would be even greater than that, but that isn't generally doneMaiden wrote:seremtan wrote:not even remotely true. b.s.
if you are talking the government giving as a percentage of the nations gdp, maybe you are right, but in terms of dollar amounts the u.s. government gives more aid than any nation in the world.
more than most of other western nations put together.....
lol, you work for a US insurance company. they make a killing out of things like thisMr.Magnetichead wrote:Did I say I wanted anyone to get hurt? No. Know why? Because I don't.

come to think of it, didn't some guy once before say that these natural disasters were 'good for the economy' because of all the rebuilding work? lol, the broken window fallacy

EU nations listed: total $ 2004 = $42,920,000,000; % GNP (mean) = 0.46
yeah

yeah, that is what i thought you were getting at. I don't think that aid vs. gdp is a fair number though. the u.s. has 7 times more people living in poverty than the total population of Norway who is the biggest contributer of aid vs. gdp. there are so many have not people in the u.s that its not really a fair comparison. 35 million in the u.s are down in out. put that in the euro and they would all be dead.
again, lets take germany alone....seremtan wrote:USA: total $ 2004 = $18,999,000,000; % GNP = 0.16Foo wrote:Cheers. Confirms the highest total but lowest as a percentage.HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote: http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelate ... sandGraphs

Yes, I'm aware of the percentages, but you're also overlooking American military spending. Prior to Bush et al coming along and fucking up the entire planet, American military spending on humanitarian operations was far and away higher than the rest of the world. Now I'm sure that's changed, and the world fucking hates the US thanks to the assholes in Washington.
