Rack mounting for audio equipment

Okay, what's the deal with rack-mountable audio kit? There's tons of it about, yet barely anywhere selling the racks to put them in?

Am I just googling for the wrong keywords or something?

Also, PC rack mounts and audio rackmounts follow the same form factor, right?

Any help greatly regurgitated.

Reinforcement?

There's plenty of new and second hand kit available in sheffield in the form of amps, mixers, decks etc....

Am only interested because next year I intend to invest in a proper stereo system, when I finally get into a place I'll stay in for more than 12 months.

Foo - try these, they definitely sell racks. Standard size is 19" width and 1U, 2U etc depth. Manufacturer you want (as an example) is Quik-Lok.

i'm curious as to how a proper stereo system has anything to do with rack mountable gear.

I'd actually really go for a decent rackmountable stereo power amp to double up powering my monitors. My stereo and my recording gear are pretty well integrated, so, since my Mac does all of the actual music playback, it'd work nicely. At the moment I have a cheap (but pretty nice) NAD power amp, but it's all clutter. Plus the quality isn't good enough for proper studio monitoring, so I have to use my rather nifty sennheiser headphones for mixing in detail.

Well, rack mount stuff usually costs more, and everyone knows that cost always equals quality

right, but you're talking about gear for a studio. certainly you wouldn't put that crap in your living room.
