What's a good 8 port router?

Post by FragaGeddon »

My Linksys router appears to be acting up.
Not sure if I should buy another Linksys or something else.
What do you recommend?

Linksys or D-link. I've had horrible luck with Netgear.

I was just going to say Netgear or D-Link, and that I've not been to fond of any Linksys' I've had the displeasure of working with.

Seriously, Netgear is good. Never had any problems with Our 4 port Router/Switch, Our 8 port switch, or my father's 4 port/wireless router/switch.

Only ever worked with one D-Link device, it was refurbished and worked just fine.

However 3 of 5 of my friends linksys routers have been royal pains in the ass to make work properly, thus I've never really recommended them to anyone. However Cisco may have kicked them into shape as of late. :icon14:

Had a couple times where I've had to unplug the power from it and plug it back in because it'd stop responding.
Also just got disconnected from xbox live a couple times also.

I install routers for a living, well and other things.

The new neatgears and linksys are what to get. D-Link is utter shit anymore, they fail quickly have a weak web interface that also fails to function often, i wouldnt stop to piss on one anymore, they used to be good, but now they suck.

Honestly i like the recent incarnations of netgear, prety much anyhting from their latest G series. Though linksys is right up there with them. Solid product.

Anything else is pretty much shit.

But hey, D-Link now has a x-box compliant sticker on the box now, so you know its good! :olo:

You never defined your budget, so I suggest this:

True, it's more than a simple 8-port router. However unlike those, it is a true firewall and is highly reliable, fast and configurable (FAR more than a standard 'router').

k, so I just bought a Belkin wireless g router (going to go wired though, for the time being.)

I've never used a router, so I'm assuming once I install the software on my sister's computer, get her connection up and running, I should be fine once I simply connect my computer to the router, correct? Or is the configuring stuff just beginning?

blah, I didn't want to pay $20 more for a Linksys, and I'm too impatient to go searching around online for a D-Link or Netgear.

Anyone ever go with Belkin?

Belkin is generally a good brand.

Unless you want to share you network with your neighbors, i suggest you enable at least WEP and mac filtering.
