• 22% of men and 23% of women are now obese – last year's figures showed 20% of men and 19% of women were obese.

The UK has the fastest growing rate of obesity in the developed world

• Between 1995 and 2002, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 2-15 in England doubled in boys - from 3% to 6% - and almost doubled in girls - from 5% to 9%.

• 28% of girls and 22% of boys are either overweight or obese. In 1995, these figures were 22% for girls and 16% for boys.

• Almost a quarter of all 2-5 year olds are overweight or obese - 23.5% - an increase from 17% in 2001.

I wouldn't expect anything less. Frankly though, I'd rather have a nation of drunkards than a nation of religious lunatics.
