Oooops
If this drive is indeed stuffed full of recoverable warez and porn, getting a third party involved might be an unappealing proposition.R00k wrote:CompUSA doesn't do anymore than you could do at home though. I had a buddy who took a drive in -- it wasn't even formatted or written over, they drive had just failed. They tried slaving it and hooking it up to a different PC and couldn't get it to work. They charged him like 40 bucks. Never tried putting the platters in a different case or anything.
I stay away from CompUSA if I can anyway.
Putting the platters into a different drive casing will only work if it's an old drive that has died because of a mechanical failure. I originally thought that's what Andy was talking about, but looks like I was off-base.riddla wrote:so how is putting the platters into another case going to help a bad sector of any kind?R00k wrote:A bad boot sector won't keep you from reading it, only keep you from booting to it.riddla wrote:50/50 chance, could have a bad boot sector.
fyi - most drives with a bad boot sector wont spin up on purpose
I've never had a bad boot sector where the drive wouldn't spin up though. That is to say, in the case of the few drives I've had fail and wouldn't spin up, I had no way of knowing what exactly the problem was. But I've dealt with tons of drives that had corrupted or bad boot sectors that were repairable. It's easy to write a new boot sector to a drive.
