Should I get a 6800GT then?

I was already planning on getting a new video card anyway. When I built my new PC, just before Doom came out, I tried to get a 6800GT. But I guess I waited too long, because all the online and local retailers were sold out of them. I wound up getting an ATI card (9600XT), which runs pretty well, but has given me some strange artifacting in games (FarCry and BF/DC).

So I've been planning on getting the 6800 for a while, and think I'm finally going to pony up the cash. My question though - now that Q4's around the corner, would there be any reason to wait? Has it been shown that Q4 runs well on a 6800 - or that it runs better on other cards? I don't see a huge swing in the market coming just for Q4 or anything, but I thought I would get some nerdy/friendly advice before I purchased it.

I know D3 runs well on the 6800 - that's why I originally wanted to buy it anyway. So I would think Q4 would be pretty comparable. What kind of cards were they using on the machines at QCon?

6800 gt will dick on a 9600xt from a great height - I got one when they were first out - recently upgraded cpu (from 64 300 to 64 3700) its still got a tonne of leg room (meaning its amazing how much the cpu was bottle neck even even an athlon 64 3000 - i suspect its still got leg room now aswell - its a great card and at £170 ish these days its a total steal

I love my GT. I honestly didn't think the jump would be this high.

Trust me, get a GT and some decent ram, and you will be flying. Nothing touches my PC. The onyl game that ran choppy was BF2 (stuttering) but i added more ram and now even thats perfect.

That's great to hear -- I might just have to upgrade my CPU after I get it also.

I was also kicking around the idea of building a 64-bit system when I built mine, but decided to wait until it was ironed out and the chipsets were settled on.

A buddy of mine just built a AMD 64 4200+ with Dual 7800GTX in SLI, 1.4TB of H/B and 4 gigs of RAM.

Littlte did he know XP only utilize 2.5gigs of RAM... :lol:

He spent $4000.00 USD on that pig.

BTW ROOK, you should get the best video card that you can. Even though the 6800GT will run the games you play now, you should prepare for the future.

Yea, but it's already been shown that the 6800 will easily keep up when I upgrade to a 64-bit system, so I can't justify spending enough money to make the step up to a higher card.

About a month ago I upgraded from a 9600XT (AGP) to an MSI 6600GT (AGP). The performance gain is outstanding.

I was able to bump my game settings up to max in almost all my games (except BF2 cause it's coded like ass).

This system uses:

P4 3.1HT
1GB RAM
Intel 845 chipset


The 3dmark2005 scores were stunning.

Before the upgrade it was less than 1000, after the upgrade it was over 3000. Considering I'm forced to deal with the AGP bottleneck, I'm quite pleased with the increase.

First thing I did was put D3, BF2, Lock-On, and all my other games to the highest settings possible. They all run smooth. :icon14:

I could pick this game apart for hours (oops, I've already done it) solely based on the ill conceived progamming.

BF2 is full of bugs and due to the nature and extent of the bugs, I'm severely convinced the backbone of the game is poorly done too (it has the quality of a bloody beta version).

Doom3 runs better in large fire fights at max settings than BF2 on SP mode just idling.

I don't hold Dice responsible for not being able to attain high performance on 'average' hardware, but I do hold them responsible for attaining at least moderate performance on ANY system (which, by the synapsis I've been getting from the community) is not happening. The game runs like ass on all systems with less than a gig and a half of RAM.

Considering the bar set by other games, they should be embarassed to have their name on it.

They should have realized after BF:V they can't code for shit and just licensed the D3 engine or HL2 Engine.
