banning mods

Post by 4days »

story:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4735603.stm

found at: http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=11808

"As the furore over the Hot Coffee modification to GTA: San Andreas rumbles on, a fan of the game and a committed modder known as Illspirit takes on industry calls for games to be made impervious to fan-made modifications."

haven't seen anything that actually says what the criticisms of modding are or who is making them.

Honestly? I know it's purely selfish but let them ban mods on new games. Will see a hardcore resurgance of indie games and old games being played and modded.

Also forgot something obvious: Can you really imagine a scenario where people are forced to release a piece of software which cannot be altered.

That would mean banning open-source software. heh.

There's no way they could destroy modding. It's gotten too large, and too many big game companies support it (id, valve, etc)

ffs this GTA:SA issue has turned into the 9/11 of videogames - a pretext for any and every crazy authoritarian move

and besides, if there were no more modding, where would the game industry get all its designers from?

Functionally there's no difference, however.

Also amusing that the mod for SA was an unauthorised one which must have involved reverse engineering the game in the first place. Something forbidden in the terms of use and also by law (IIRC).
