Sometimes My Pictures screensaver will get ya!!

Post by Giraffe }{unter »

Working on peoples personal computers or work computers you really need to be ready for everything.

Story #1

We are removing junk from one users computer, after it was setup we had a meeting durring that time the screensaver kicked in and it was displaying images of nude and half nude women that could be seen through the windows of our department. Needless to say some people were upset.

Story #2

While running windows update on another users computer the Screensaver kicked in and was scrolling through all these photos of this guy with his kids and family. Then it started scrolling through photos of him naked wearing leather and holding his cock :icon28:

I've been a tech so long now, that I don't even care about that shit anymore. Doesn't phase me a bit. In fact... it's kinda funny to have conversations with clients (execs and alike) after hours on how to safely download porno and view/store it undetected.

Porn isn't really a problem, it's usually the sick shit, like a few years ago we had a guy with 7 gig of foot photos requesting a new hard drive...

I also really don't want to look at the cock of someone I see on a daily basis...

Easy solution, force the screensave to "Default/Blank" via Group Policy. Screen savers are a waste of valuable PC resources and have been known to cause issues. It was one of the first things I learned in school. Screen Savers are a total waste.

I used to work at a PC repair store, half the PCs we got in were only cunted because of the amount of porn the users had downloaded. Another great one was when this guy (who had a hell of a lot of porn on his PC) bought a DVD re-writer from us and wanted us to fit it and show him how to burn stuff to it. He made no attempt to hide the fact that he wanted to burn all his porno to DVD, and when we were showing him how, as an example he had some naked bitches mudwrestling.
Loads of hilarity was had at that place, hehe.

We don't even allow our users to set their own wallpaper. The only tab available under the 'Display' control is "Settings."

The general population doesn't know how to use a pc responsibly, so I see no reason to increase my workload just because they want things to look pretty.

Users should be lucky to get a command shell and a Desktop. Anytime they bitch, you can always remind them of how much worse it could be.

dammit, raw DID learn something in school
And shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord for thee, Power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command, we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine patris, et fili, et spiritus sancti.

works great for production, but sales guys and engineers get full priveledges to do as they please, remember it's an odd company I work for.

In time we are taking things away from users a little at a time. I'm already at peace with being called hitler, and my boss backs me when management tries to go over my head. We are taking it slow and steady. At this pace the managers are asking us to start making some of the changes we planned to roll out. They are starting to realize all the good that came from changes we have made, and now offer less resistance when we say "it's for the good of the company"

It would be cake if it was started the right way and users had no right what so ever to do anything to their computers, but now we are working backwards and it's an uphill battle most of the way.

Have you considered logging all trouble tickets and correlating their solutions with examples of how those problems couldn't have happened with proper access rights? Hell, add some rough downtime information in and how long it took your techs to fix so they can see the cost of that downtime in wages. Assigning a dollar value to downtime always seems to bring people onside faster. You should try it for a couple months then present it; it might be just the type of proof management needs to start listening.
