DVD+R vs DVD-R

What is the advantage of 8x DVD+R over 8x DVD-R, or vice versa?

As far as I know there is none

I think most old DVD players have less problems with DVD-R than DVD+R though

iirc, only DVD+R can be DL, besides that, none

There are a number of significant technical differences between the dash and plus formats, and although most consumers would not notice the difference, the plus format is considered by some to be better engineered
