Anyone see that machine?

Post by Guest »

That can see atoms? I know it might be old but I thought it was cool. I saw it on discovery this morning and I wonder what kind of applications this could be used for?

Are you talking about scanning-tunneling microscopes? Or protein crystallography? Strictly speaking, neither "see" atoms, but they're useful for identifying molecular structure.

That brings back horrible memories of High School. :tear:

Well you couldn't really see it but it was like static on a tv and some parts were darker than other parts and the bright parts were atoms apparently. The process involves sometype of chemical that does something with the atoms making them visible or something. I'm not really sure I got most if any of what they were talking about since I was kinda just staring at atoms at the time and thought it was neat.

Something like this? This is scanning-tunneling microscopy.

Nothing like that. It's more static than anything.

That wasn't an atom you were looking at Kracus you were just high

You might be thinking of something different than I am, but I don't know what else it might be. These are the closest examples I could find, both from STM.

Yeah that second link with the bottom pic is kinda what it looked like except it was all black and white and the dots weren't so well organized. It was pretty neat to see though. I thought they might have had something about it on the discovery website but I haven't found anything yet.

I found a link to it http://www.exn.ca/dailyplanet/

Just scroll down to the one that says moving atoms.

Yeah, so just like werldhed said, it's an STM.

Oh no I'm sure he needed that cleared up. :dork:

Anyway yeah I didn't know the name of the machine but the pics still don't look anything like that first one he posted. It's kinda neat though isn't it?

As far as I know, the only way to "see" atoms is through an electron microscope.

A lot of people would say it's a bad idea, on your first day out of prison, to go right back to stalking the tranny hooker that knocked out five of your teeth. But that's how I roll..

Right now as we speak, scientists are using this device to create the worlds smallest string bikini.
