be forewarned that a lot of this is more mellow and acoustic... "sunday morning music" i guess is what they call it, even though i listen to it everyday of the week.
indie is the majority of the music out there, if we define it to be all music by artists that aren't tethered by a major record label (yet). if indie is so in, then well i consider that a good thing. indie for the sake of indie, though, is a bad thing, because there are lots of artists out there who aren't 'indie' but are still good. not good to limit your music collection by a philosophy of economics.

:icon26: I was more referring to 'indie' started off as a term to define bands that weren't tied to a record label (independant), but now it's changed to lesser-known bands, usually with a certain style -- it's become a genre in itself, with its own supporting labels and major bands with the roadies and whatnot. It's interesting how "not well known" becomes a popular genre within itself.
Well, the singer for The Postal Service started out (and is still in) Death Cab for Cutie. I've been listening to them since about 2000, but their most recent album (Atlanticism) is the only one played on the radio. I think they're coming out with a new album soon. You might check them out.
I've never really watched it but I believe the OC is largely responsible for the recent popularisation of indie bands like Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service.
Not that that's a bad thing. In fact it kindof makes a mockery of indie for the sake of indie.

Transatlanticism.
Some other recommendations:
The Guild League
Lowgold (see Grudge mentioned them)
The Helio Sequence
Innocence Mission
Belle & Sebastian (could you even refer to them as indie anymore? probably not, but they're still essential).

Dntel and Figurine are very much related to the Postal Service. The former is 'the other guy' of the PS and the latter is his home band. Hmm, that sentence does not really compute...

I dunno, I think bands with a certain style still get referred to as indie even after they become popular.
Eg. Interpol, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Bloc Party
Also, even though these bands are internet famous there's still plenty people in the real world who haven't heard of them.
