Toyota/Lexus problems?

Toyota/Lexus problems?

So this past year once in a while my mid-90s Toyota would have a skidding problem. It was quite rare, but once in a while the car would lose control and just skid for a while. It was quite dangerous and so got rid of the car. Took it to a mechanic and never did figure out what the problem was exactly.

My girlfriend has been driving her Lexus LS400 (about the same age as my toyota) and recently its been skidding randomly as well (maybe once a week). She got the shock pads replaced, but once in a while it still happens. Still have no idea why. She's thinking about getting a new car if it can't be fixed. Her mechanic doesnt know what the problem is exactly and can't replicate it.

Anyway, any of you car buffs out there heard of anything similar/know how to fix it? I've tried doing some research online and I thought I found something useful about a Toyota having a skid problem (due to worn out shock pads + problem with the front wheel drive). Her car now has new shock pads and is back wheel drive I believe. But *shrug*, no clue. Thanks in advance for any help.

wtf

how does a car lose control by itself? and by "skid for awhile" i'm thinking you mean the brakes/wheel would lock up?

you could try slowing down.

but seriously your description of the problem is so vague it's hard to give any help. what exactly happens when this skid is induced. think back to all the times it happened, is there one thing you were doing each time when it happened--ie. braking, accelerating, hard turning, etc.

or getting a new set of tires... jesus.. why the fuck do people blame the car when it does something unexpected? 99.99999% of the time its the driver's Fault.

i had a 1989 toyota Camry.. ( yea, thats right! ) and it dident Skid worth shit, UNLESS I MADE IT SKID!

By the way, Front wheel drive, and Rear wheel Drive.. not Back wheel drive..

Also, This has nothing to do with what wheel's get the power UNLESS they are spinning when you are hitting the gass ( again, your Fault )..

Also, The LS400 has ABS, ( Alti-LOCK Breaking System ) this would Stop the wheels from Locking up during Hard breaking times.

if this is the Case ( that its locking during hard breaking ) get the ABS System Checked out, else, learn to drive so you dont need to break harshly.

anyway, thats about enough of a rant from me.

also, there are to meny God damn also's in this also post!

I don't know exactly how they work, but assuming it's not one of the above problems, could it be the differential somehow giving too much power to one of the wheels? :paranoid:

So you're saying when you touched the brakes, they would just lock up completely in all 4 wheels and the car would slide out of control?

Were you mashing the brakes hard? Did you feel the brakes 'push back' like anti-locks do? Did it happen when the road was wet?

Surely they didn't lock up by themselves, without you pressing the brake did they?

it seemed to happen mostly when accelerating (and not hard acceleration, just normal), but sometimes when taking a turn (i guess that would in a way be the same thing...heh)

so braking i guess is not the problem. the tires are fairly new.

ill see if i can get some more information and let you guys know. i know its not much. thanks once again.

that would be caused by an open diffreential.. both wheels are not reciving power, the Differential will send the power the The wheel with the least resistance. ( Ie. The outside in a turn, or the one that is Spinning the Fastest )

Chupacabra: If its happeneing during Accel then it is infact the drivers fault, Not the cars.. allthough the tires are new, this Dosent mean that they are GOOD TIRES. my tires have 78% tread life left on them.

allthough when a little bit of rain hits the road, i slip Like a motherfucker ( this is the joy of Rear wheel Drive... w000 drift that Bish! >:E )

Take it easy, check the rating on the tries, They will have a grading system.. Summer A B C D or F, Same go's for winter, Spring,.. or they could rate it by condition ( SNow, rain, Etc )

check that out and get back to us..

Allthough i am 100% sure that there is nothing wring and you are just pegging the shit and leating her spin.
