Digital Camera

Post by bork[e] »

About to go buy one in a few days and need some information. I know fuck all about what is good/not good about a camera but I know many of you do so...

Needs to be ~$200.00 USD.
The lense needs to be able to fit inside the camera. (So when I place it in my pocket it doesn't look like I have cancer growing on my leg)
Decent size preview screen. (whatever the term is for that window in the back.)

That's what I want in the features of it, what I would like someone to do is fill in the blanks for all the specifications of it. I tried asking the dude at Office Max last night and he said:
Well sir, the more Mega Pixels the camera has the better the camera is...
:icon26:

Anyone care to give me some recomindations or maybe just some insight on what all those numbers mean... tia.

All you want to know:

edit: My Canon PowerShot A520 was around $260, and I am thoroughly happy with it.
And yes, the lens does retract flush with the camera.

Haven't had a lot of time to browse through the site yet but it looks like what I was looking for. Nice camera also, even after seeing countless pictures by these little things I'm still impressed by what they can turn out.

Awesome :icon14: I found one just a few hours ago at Wal-Mart that had a metal face to it and like a 4x6 inch preview screen on it..was very nice, then I noticed it was made by HP and placed it back on the counter. ;)

Or "Powershot Digital Elph", as they are called in the US.

I have an Ixus 400, it's great for casual photographing. The newer ones have got nice big screens too.

Yea, I've been pleasantly surprised with it. I can even shoot videos underwater!

That's good quality. Is that on the highest resolution? Now I'm tempted to get an underwater case for my A95. Those single-use underwater cameras just aren't that great.

That's the second-highest resolution it will record in video. The highest resolution is better, but doesn't record sound.

Funny you should ask.

Anytime I show the video to somebody, they always ask what she was doing. I tell them I was asking her if she was cold, and that's her signal -- "Just a little bit."

In reality, that's our underwater sign for "shrinkage."

edit: It was shot in the quarry where we did our certification dives, just barely across the border in south Kentucky.

Huh. Do you happen to know what the resolution is for the highest? Mine records at 640x480 but still captures sound.

Also, it's pretty cool that it can still pick up sound in the underwater case.

Here is what my bro has:

It is indeed a Canon Elph - and its probably a bit above your price range - but I can verify that its an excellent camera.

For the camera, there is a list of merchants and their prices here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/C ... n_a520.asp

I got mine at BeachCamera.com (looks like their price has dropped on it by nearly 50 bucks now), and didn't have a single problem with them. The gear came in less than a week, and it was well-packaged and padded.

I also bought a 256-meg memory stick, since it only comes with a 16-meg, and the underwater case for it, all from the same site.

The model number of the underwater case is WP-DC60, and it's made by Canon.

The highest res. is 640x480, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't capture sound at that setting. I'll check tonight just to make sure.

And yea, I was really surprised by the sound quality underwater. Sound travels faster underwater anyway, and apparently the case, while it is locked in solidly against the camera body, transfers and amplifies the physical sound waves very well into the camera's mic.

The first time I watched that video and heard the bubbles and breathing, I was thinking "Yea, I'm mu'fucking Jacques Cousteau bitch!" lol
