Would anyone be interested in reading the Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky and discussing it? There are even some free translations online if you don't want to buy it, but its a very large book so you probably don't want to read it online. Just an idea

It doesn't have to be the Brothers K- it could be anything else that people are interested in. Frankly, I'll read anything.

Oh, I mentioned in some thread that one of the last books I read was:

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon

You probably replied to it too, but it was a very good read.

Scarlett Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy is a faster read...pretty good stuff, but I have always been interested in the history of the French revolution, so I am a bit biased. It's definitely not on the same literary scale as The Brothers K.

I read Crime & Punishment by him. Good stuff.

Currently ploughing through the Dune novels. Up to Chapterhouse Dune. Fucking excellent :icon14:

Dune is gay. The first book was good, the second and third were passable, and then it all went to shit after that. God Emperor of Dune and Heretics of Dune were fucking awful.

And as long as Dostoevsky keeps coming up... I went searching through an old stash of books looking for "The Brothers K", but only found "The Idiot." Has anyone read it? Is it any good? I think that'll be next on the list. That and "Stories From Lake Wobegon." :icon26:

though I partially agree with you about God Emperor. If Leto had just said "my prescience tells me that this Golden Path is the only course of future history that won't end in the destruction of the human species, and I have to merge with a giant worm, become a tyrant and live 3000 years to make sure you follow it ok d00dz?" it would have been a whole more straightforward. There was a lot of pseudo-mystical bollox in that book

frank cunting herbert was off his tree with all the amateur philosophy and feminine supremacy rubbish. He shoulda just stopped after the first book, or possibly done one sequel that combined 2 and 3 without the hot air.

But i find it hard to place [deserved] value on the first instalment of something so bloated, so repetitive and so -- ultimately -- pedestrian.

It's okay, but Crime and Punishment is better.

really liked the first one, would recommend it to anyone. the rest were shite, would've been better to leave it as a one-off - and not make that bloody tv series.

You know, I've read a lot of Frank Herbert, but I've never read any of the Dune series.

Try "The White Plague".
Especially poignant in today's political climate.

my mum just finished reading it and reccommended it to me. I wouldn't be adverse to everyone even semi-agreeing on a few novels and we'll all read them, but for the moment i'll track down Angels and Demons for my late-night reading and get back to you all.

I didnt long finish that either, good book.
Tho some of it was abit odd, like the fact that none of the
cameras were recording and not one of the 100's they had

I read Angels and Demons last year and I bought the illustrated version recently.

Basically, it's Dan Brown warming up for the Da Vinci Code. Having the same main character, another great historical European city (Rome), lots of cryptology and codes, large religious undertones, impossible escape scenes, lots of chases and deadlines.

Yeah, it's the pre-Da Vinci book. Amusing and a page-turner at times.
