Urgent Help Needed Please - Data Recovery

Post by R00k »

Is there a free data recovery utility that someone here has used, and can recommend?

One of my users just deleted a bunch of very important files and we need to get them back.

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated.

Free, I know of none.

Costly, I know of a few that work well.

I'd recommend looking at Easy Recovery Pro.

Really? I'm mainly just looking for some sort of undelete utility -- the files were only deleted in the last half hour or so, and I'm sure they can be recovered by information on the file system.

Have either of you used any of them before?

*fondly remembers undelete.exe*

Not to state the obvious, but make sure to install the utility on another drive so you don't overwrite the lost data with the data recovery program.

This also might be a good time to try out the knoppix disk. I'll google and see if there's any data recovery tools that come with it.

edit: yeah, it includes ntfsprogs to undelete on an NTFS.

Tuneup 2004. Don't know if it does undelete in the 30 day trial though.

Restoration by Brian Kato:

It's also in Jugg's link and works pretty well. :icon14:

It looks like she overwrote the data by restoring something else from the recycle bin that was in the same directory.

I've used 4 utilities, and none of them are finding what we're looking for -- they're hardly finding anything at all.

Which is strange, because when I run them on my pc, they find like 28000 files. :(

I don't presume to know anything about your co-workers, but this part doesn't surprise me :)

Murr. I left the thread open for ages before I replied and didn't see this :icon32:

All our departments have network storage available that gets backed up every night. The problem is there are a lot of users, and even managers, who don't bother with it and keep important business data on their local drives anyway.

Looks like she's out of luck.

Well, she's a nice girl, I hate to see it happen to her really.

She took over another lady's position, and that lady had been keeping these financial reports on the hard drive. She hasn't been in the position very long, and was just updating the reports.

Too bad. :smirk:

Once I formatted this professor's C: because the twit student we had working for us forgot to leave a note on it telling us he was still working on it. I hosed out all his outlook archives, but recovered them with Easy Recover Pro. Best $99 we ever spent.
