He didn't have enough to spend being a skint student, but he still had plenty. He went pretty crazy a month or so ago (he doesn't live here now, parents took him home); the general opinion of us in the house I think is that the stress of a dissertation plus other work added to his getting pissed and stoned every day helped him on his way. A rarity I'd have thought, but fucking creepy when it happened.

So, then, by that logic, the only reason one should stay sober/not high is because they cannot afford the alternative?Kracus wrote:I dunno, depends on the persons situation if you ask me. If you can afford to smoke everyday and you like to then why not? If you can't then that's a reason why not. If you still smoke though at the expense of other basic needs like food a car house then yeah you have a serious problem.

I had a 23 year old woman in the other night who claimed to have needed treatment for marijuana addiction. I didn't laugh, honest. OK, maybe a little chuckle. She was Indian though, so maybe her folks needed to believe that it was an addiction so they wouldn't have to blame her.tnf wrote:I've always noticed that, in spite of the fervent claims of "not being addicted" to weed, the stoners I've know sure couldn't go for long periods of time without their pre-occupation with getting high becoming apparent.
I'll have you know my argument has absolutely no basis in statistics whatsoever.Memphis wrote:Drink and weed are perfectly fine. It's the abusers that fuck themselves and the whole culture surrounding either.
I'm slightly perturbed that someone like yourself Geebs would go off on one based on the usual statistical and stereotypical crap.
You have to bear in mind that in my job, I meet a lot of arseholes. Most of the personality disorders are users to some extent, and they're generally very paranoid and extremely immature - "doc, I want to carry on my self-destructive lifestyle but I'm sure there's something wrong with me. If you don't find what it is I'll sue I know it's not the drugs I want a scan can I have some diazepam I'm really shaking......" and so on until I throw them out.
Perhaps not as bad as the people who go out over the weekend, do a bunch of coke, and then come in to tell me their heart's beating really quickly, why is that doc?

I submit that someone smoking pot daily to get stoned will probably be lazy and potentialy own a crusty brain. One that smokes pot to get high daily, knows when to not get high and therefore does not.

I used to smoke about once a fortnight with my mates, but had to bail out because it started messing with my head too much. Last time i smoked, i can't remember the entire night from when i lit up at about 7:30pm, through until 9:30am the next morning when i woke -- couldn't remember where the fuck i was for 10 minutes, took about half an hour till i put 2 and 2 together and got alright again. still can't remember the night. apparently it was fun.
The explanation is throughout the thread. Stereotyping groups of people based on very limited contact with said groups.
However, most of these opinions are (I think) based on the observation of young people and pot. I agree, weed and young people are a shaky mix. They haven’t fully developed good working habits yet and are still somewhat irresponsible.
Adult working class people that smoke weed are totally different. They have good work habits and know what their priorities and responsibilities are. Of course there is always some exceptions but, in general, this holds.
I have some respect for Geebs for the simple fact that he is a doctor, and I’m sure he worked hard to get where he is today. I just don’t agree with the way he sometimes tries to use that piece of paper as a smart pass. Have you not ever seen a doctor that was so fucking stupid you wondered how he/she ever passed med school?
In general as a rule, I try never to judge someone regardless how stupid they may seem. Have I walked a few miles in their shoes?

Fair argument, I mean maybe we shouldn't just be pulling generalizations about different groups of people staight out of our arses....shadd_. wrote:The explanation is throughout the thread. Stereotyping groups of people based on very limited contact with said groups.
Errr, hang on a secshadd_. wrote:Adult working class people that smoke weed are totally different. They have good work habits and know what their priorities and responsibilities are. Of course there is always some exceptions but, in general, this holds.
Wait, there's another!shadd_. wrote:Have you not ever seen a doctor that was so fucking stupid you wondered how he/she ever passed med school?
That's a bit unfair. When I was giving my university anecdote, I purposely didn't say, "while I was a student at Oxford university, one of the best universities in the world". I know perfectly well that it's not the same thing as "I'm very clever", I just use the paper thing to troll Kracus.shadd_. wrote: I just don’t agree with the way he sometimes tries to use that piece of paper as a smart pass.
Yeah, I smoked weed for a while at uni and it made me feel like a retard.shadd_p. wrote:In general as a rule, I try never to judge someone regardless how stupid they may seem. Have I walked a few miles in their shoes?
Don't get me wrong; I hate all substance users equally. I hate junkies; I hate young drunks, I hate middle aged drunks; I don't actually mind unreconstructed old drunks so much, they're more polite than the younger ones; I despise cokeheads. Benzodiazepine addicts are broadly just twats. Most of the pethidine addicts I see have Sickle Cell and therefore have an excuse, but it always saddens me a lot when I see a Sickle sufferer head off down the "addict" route. Pethidine is really bad for the personality, though.
Mostly, people have missed the point of this thread, which is that I see no reason why people have a "right" to smoke weed which is always assumed; so if you tell people with paranoia and panic disorder that maybe, just maybe, if they layed off the skunk, they wouldn't end up being heavily medicated by their psychiatrist all the time, they always go "NO YOU'RE TRYING TO TAKE MY SKUNK AWAY THE GOVERNMENT IS LISTENING", then try to lamp you and run out.

I quit drinking 3 months ago (I'll still have a couple beers if something special comes up) and have switched over to marijuana. I still feel like the same person, even after smoking it every night. I'm still just as active, can still function the same, I guess it all depends on how much you use it though, but I don't see how more than one time a day is needed.
