Anyone can play an electric kit like the roland v drums you're playing. All the built in sounds are studio produced samples.

Now try and copy me on a real kit  :

Erm, let me guess again, was it Echobelly?

p.s. Drum, you should probably have put the mic in a place where it doesn't make the hi-hat sound completely out of time.

I don't think the hihat sounds out of time, although it might sound unbalanced/too loud due to the mic being nearer it and the snare. Where does it sound out of time? If you're referring to the jazz clip, the hihat is intentionally changing.

I know, when I listened to the clip with the volume up it was alright; but it's hard to hear enough of the rest of the drums so you can actually identify where the changes are supposed to go

Hey geebs, you know a bit about recording? Instead of just the minidisc I'm now trying my hand at recording in my kitchen with my small mixer and mics. Test recording below.

This is the mixer and mic setup:
http://jamesseph.phpwebhosting.com/DRuM ... Drums7.jpg
http://jamesseph.phpwebhosting.com/DRuM ... Drums9.jpg
http://jamesseph.phpwebhosting.com/DRuM ... rums8+.jpg

I'm sharing one mic per 2 toms. SM57 on snare, D12 inside BD. The floor tom mic is pretty shit, and I've pointed it more towards the 15 because otherwise it doesn't get picked up. If I turn up any of the trim pots up even slightly there's distortion, but there is more presence. So I've got all trims on zero. Even so, there's clipping on the cymbals as you can hear. The sound came out pretty flat and dull, so I've added 10 dB to it and reverb with cooledit. How can I improve the sound more, get more presence and get rid of distortion? I also have 2 pzm flat plate mics as overheads which I haven't stuck to the wall yet, but I will. It's all going into minidisc btw. I'm not looking for perfection since I'd need more expensive gear for that, but I'd like to improve it. Where should the left and right channel sliders to the far right of the desk be set approximately?
