Yeah, at work.. not for a personal machine. I still prefer Apple's build quality to Dells. I was talking about this with a guy at work today. We would by Dullmacs over Windows Dells if given the option of an OS X upgrade price equal to XP Home -> Pro upgrade... So if it costs 80 bucks to get XP Pro or OS X up from XP Home, OS X would win, especially if MS releases its OS X SMS feature pack.

what's the MS OS X SMS pack?

but yeah, I'd prefer a Dellmac over a Dellwin too.....especially if Apple would insist the licencees on minimum specifications, etc.

We use ghost for image deployment. SMS is a great inventory/package deployment tool though... It's fun to program in a sick, sad kind of way too

yeah, we just suck ours down from SMS. HQ does any/all programming for it though since it's company wide standard images/security deployments and such.

The main problem with SMS is that it does things when it feels like it. Programming it via the WMI interface is a pain in the ass too.

I wrote a web app that pushes advertisements (jpeg files) out to 1500 clients by updating the advertisement (sms ad) schedule. SMS is unpredictable. Sometimes it fires right away, sometimes it twiddles its thumbs

we've not experienced anything silly with ours, although, just the past week we got our new Dell 7250(?) with the Itanium 2 processors that's still awaiting the newest SMS software which will be implemented next tuesday.

ffs, i can't recall the model of the "old" Poweredge.

Our SMS monster is an 8 way xeon. SMS is great, but I just wish it was more integrated with Active Directory, a little more predictable, and had a more widely documented SDK. It's great for system's management, but for programming, what I do, it's flakey

Same kind of stupid behaviour as SUS.

You know its kinda funny, i was just talking to the guys at work about droping a mac cert in before getting my MCSE. They all laughed and i preceeded to express my confidence that Mac OS X is a superior operating system that suffers the same trials of linux ( lack of users and wide spread software support ). I finished off with the statement of " watch, in the next few years when longhorn comes out and fails ot meet expectations, you will see people turning to mac." I believe with this news that its true even more now.

They might not take over, but i think you will see a significant increase in market share over the next 3 years, if all stays on its current development timeline.
