just how strong are animals?

Post by [xeno]Julios »

Anyone know of any studies that directly measure various animals' physical strength?

I'm sure you could train an intelligent primate to use a simple weight machine.

I'd be interested in quantitative data for animals like chimps, orangutans, gorillas, bears, wolverines, and lions/tigers.

I've read that chimps are 5-8 times stronger than an adult human male, and that it can pull 1000 pounds with one arm. Not sure what pulling 1000 means exactly. (weight might have been on wheels, or was it pulling it up?/etc)

found this:
How Strong Are Gorillas?

To date, no research has been conducted into how strong gorillas are compared to humans. Comparisons cannot be made very easily. Some people say that a silverback male is ten times stronger than a man while others claim a silverback is 27 times stronger. However, neither argument has been proved. A gorilla male probably looks much stronger than he actually is, as he doesn't have that much more muscle tissue than humans.
Even so it is very difficult to bring gorillas under control when they are aggressive or when they are panicking. Even a four-year-old gorilla is difficult for a single person to control.

just very curious. I like to understand the nature of things, and the strength of an animal is part of its nature.

Yes Alcide bourque, sorry. It's been 10 years. Maybe Raymond is his middle name I'm not sure where I came up with that name but that's definitely him. I'm from up north where he's located.

It's been done with humans.

...

I know what you meant, though. Chimps are supposed to be five times the strength of homo sapiens, so it'd be awesome to see what one could do if they were ripped to the maxxx like me.

I'm pretty sure I could take a wild chimp, though. I'd do to them what those two did at a zoo a few weeks ago, remember?

So you're saying you're pretty sure you could take something 5 times stronger than you?

I read about a female chimp lifting an insane amount of weight during a fit of rage in an old issue of the Guinness book of records. (1988 I think)

I don't remember the exact amount or what it was that she lifted, but it was a lot.
