Just fired up the Ubuntu Live CD for a trial spin. So far, not bad at all. Loaded into the GNOME desktop in about 2 mins (not bad for running off a CD), set up the network card, and started browsing.
If anyone's vaguely interested in trying a ready-rolled installation of Linux which runs from CD and doesn't affect your C drive in any way, give it a spin: http://www.ubuntulinux.org
Torrent file available. Burn the ISO image to disk with CDBurnerXP pro if you need a free windows CD burner

I'd like a way of saving live CD settings onto a USB flash drive, but probably asking too much. I may well install this onto a spare drive sometime soon and have a proper play around with it.
My work is starting to demand I have some Linux experience, so I'm trying to jump the gun and get some in before it's really needed. Since I know nowt.

You can absolutelly save your settings, google it. There are plenty of guides that describe where settings are saved and how to mount jump drives.
Installing linux on a spare drive is ridiculously easy. I encourage it, it is also a great learning experience.

edit : Yes i know its possible, but ive had poor luck with doing so.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.

it's very nice. you're just getting around to this?
my only worry is i dont want nix to gank ALL of my free space..
Tho it "SHOULD" work if i use my "backup" D:/ and take out of it right? because honestly, id rather that drive be "full" than my C:
and while were on the subject.. Best distro for relearning linux anymore.. honestly, its been almost 2 years since ive even touched linux, and id "like" something thats simple but powerful..

Im really giong for compatability here.. id like everything to WORK.. sound, video, ect.. without a ton of fuss.. :-\
Had Mandrake 10.0 installed recently. I've never had any problems with hardware. In fact on install everything I have would work. The only thing I really had to mess with was the nvidia driver when I had my GF2.

Partition Magic should do exactly what you want it to do.
As for which distribution, honestly, its like the domestic vs imports debate. Some people have different tastes and swear by them.
My best advice would be to learn some flavor of BSD (freeBDS, NetBSD, OpenBSD)or some flavor of Debian(Knoppix, Ubuntu, Debian Sarge).
