Let's say that I have a MAC address
One that belongs to a PC that's tried to connect to my wireless network, and failed, thanks to 128 bit WEP.
What can I do with said MAC address?

Open your network, let them connect, sniff their traffic, let the rest follow naturally

You can't do much with a mac address exept block it. Normally the the ARP table of your wireless router should translate it into a IP address, but since u secured it correctely, it fails to attribute an IP address to that MAC address.
Anyway, tracing a mac address over a wireless network is as harder than tracing someon on a cellphone wich is actually easier because you can triangelate (sp?) to a certain area.

Nonsense, this is clearly a cyberterrorist threat to my home network and as such I have every right to beat the unholy dogshit out of everyone in my neighborhood that might be harboring a computer.
Perhaps I'll use the .44 magnum that came in my box of Fruit Loops this morning to help in my suppression of pinko, Jihadi inter-terrorists.

You could turn on MAC address filtering on your router and block that address, even though I doubt they would get by a 128 bit encryption key. Sometimes a computer with wireless can just attempt to connect on it's own especially when the user sets it to connect to any available network so there is a chance that it's an innocent dumbass who doesn't have a clue.
If you have evil intentions then disconnect your broadband modem, disconnect all but one computer, and open up your network invite the PC in then poke around and see what you can find.
Most people do not have admin passwords, and most people open their computers up by using the guest account so it should be an easy task.

Yeah, I just read an article about that, and the cracking time is down to a matter of minutes now, using readily available open-source tools.PhoeniX wrote:Are you just using WEP for security? That can be cracked in a few hours, I'd enable MAC filtering too.
I'm going to start using WPA, but I'm not sure if my new wireless Xbox Live adapter supports it.
