Everytime a new version of Office comes out, it comes with a new XML gimmick

It'll probably work a tad better than that.

Tru, but what software doesn't? XML is becoming widely used for many good reasons.

Surely this will mean its even easier for other companies to create programs that mimic office then? (If they can read the files in plain-text)

Importing and exporting will be far easier.

This is really unusual for MS to do something like this. This will make it easier for people to use competing products; and THAT is not part of the MS business philosophy.

Exactly. Its about (finally) focusing more on open standards.

But less people would buy the MS stuff then, seems a stupid thing to do to me.

They submitted C# and the CLI (I think) to standards bodies, they're doing this stuff a bit more frequently.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great companies that make some really innovative products. I just happen to like (most of) Microsoft's products because they make my job easier which means more time at the pub or beach :icon25:
