it's not a choice to be depressed
For some it is... For other's there are drugs, and for others it's mental fitness to help them through.

those that choose to be depressed for attention are idiots, those that have no choice and choosed NOT to help themselves are not verry bright either

you seem to have a very naive view of depression GH.

Have you ever lost someone close to you, or just felt really shitty coz life ain't working out?

and it lasts for a while, but sooner or later, your body and brain restabilizes and you feel relatively normal again.

Well imagine your brain was unable to do this, so you just remained in a shitty mood

for months on end.

There's a difference between true depression (as defined medically) and personality disorder (a term invented because you're not allowed to write someone's diagnosis down as "wanker"). One of the features of true depression is that it's extremely difficult to get help. Firstly, you don't leave the house, secondly you don't feel the point of getting helped, and thirdly and possibly most importantly, you don't feel worthy of help.

You can summarize the above as: personality disorders take an overdose and come and tell you about it; people with depression take an overdose and come in dead.

Why don't you use your tough love attitude and go cure them all then? You could make millions. :smirk:

I think the biggest point out of all this (the confessions site), is that it lets people know they aren't different from everyone else.

For a lot of the people you're talking about, their biggest problem is that they're overwhelmed -- they really think their plight is unique, and nobody understands them, etc. Seeing something like this can bring it home for some of those people, and let them know that there IS a way to toughen-up and take what's coming with their chin up. It lets them know that even strong and successful people in the world have the same problems, and feel the same way about things, as they do.

Some people inherently have the ability to squash their doubts and overcome adversity of that kind. Some people don't have the will to because they feel like they're being singled out, and feel like their situation is unique and impossible to overcome. That's part of depression, and it's not necessarily voluntary.

If you go through your days letting every obstacle in your path hit you square in the face, and then trying to rationalize why you must have deserved it, it's pretty hard to just say "oh hell, I'm supposed to be feeling good about all this" -- especially if that reaction/behavior is the result of brain chemical problems; or has been ingrained in you for years and years, and maybe even learned from the people who raised you.

well I'm not saying it's wrong, just unhealthy. It's great to know you are not the only one suffering, but it's not good to have 2 suffering people depressing each other conversing about how much their life sucks.

Sorry a depressed person cannot be helped until they are ready, I have tried my best with friends or girlfriends and it's like fighting a never ending uphill battle. I choose not to get involved anymore. I stray away from the subjects that set them off, and try to steer the conversation it a positive directions.

I pisses me off that I can not help two of my close friends, now we barely speak. I thought I had it all down.

I grew up learning it was OK to fly off the handle and let rage cover everything, the answer to that from my doctor was here take a few of these it will chill you out, I refused and worked it out in my own head. I thought that could alpply to everyone, but not if they don't have any hope.

What gets me is not the people who cannot be helped, but the ones who have to work at being depressed just for attention. It's really not that bad living life is what you make of it, even your worst day in life there is always something good in it.

Thats not the case for most of them that I've met. Sure, some are whiny miserable wretches that might just be better off dead but most are intelligent, interesting, and fairly well-balanced people. They just don't happen to share the same sense of style or interests that most do.

As someone who has treated several of both types, I think this is a fair summary. The toughest bit I had to learn was that treatment can sometimes give depressed folks just enough strength to go ahead and kill themselves. One of the reasons I got out of the biz.

I bookmarked this ages ago and forgot about it, I could say OLD! but I'll say thanks for the reminder, 'cos I'd forgotten about it and I love stuff like this. I've got the grouphug book.

Anyway people don't have to be wallowing in / afflicted with depression to have a secret.

Uhm, as I understand it G}{ was, at first, not talking about truely depressed people but about Goth idiots who want to be depressed when they aren't. And if their neighbour goth is more depressed than them, they have to be even more depressed. That's just pathetic, because it's not about being depressed but about a certain attitude, fitting the goth profile to get the feeling they can identify them with a sort of "social" profile.

Thats kind of like saying anyone who is into bodybuilding has the mental capacity of an ape (disproved right here by tnf, Sys0p, and Juggernaut among others) or that all people who are into the hiphop subculture are wannabe-thugs (obviously disproved by Casedogg). What you've put forward is a rather pathetic generalization that, while it may fit some in the goth subculture, certainly isn't representative of all. The two examples I've given here are readily disproved even amongst Q3W's relatively small community.

Why don't you do something that requires some thought like looking at the fact people are individuals regardless of the way they dress, their hobbies, or music they listen to.
