my take on the current line of sets:

DLP - good all around performance, depending on manufacturer. Samsung makes good sets, but i recall some issues with, i think, the 5085. i'll take a look tomorrow.

LCD - great colors, horrible black levels

Plasma - good to great colors, insane heat machine, sucks electricity like no one's business, expensive.

you also might want to look at the current crop of dlp front projectors.

i'll do a comparison of those two models tomorrow, been a long day.

btw, that second link is bunk.

*listens in on this thread for ideas*

My 21" monitor has a larger viewable area than my current TV.

OTOH, it makes even the shittiest encoded XviD look nice and smooth....

My current plan is to wait until I can find the time + cash to refinish my basement and build a screen for a DLP projector. Projectors get you a large screen at a relatively low cost. Alot of variables to take into account (projectors made for conference rooms give shitty black levels in a home theatre setup, etc), but it's the direction I'm planning on going.

word on the street is that some of the Samsung DLP's have very noisy color wheels, which are covered under their warranty obviously, but still a pain in the *ss and renders the set "not so new" once someone has to do surgery on it.

There are also some rainbow artifacts on some of the Samsung DLP sets, but it's pretty random.

best bet is to go demo one, but be sure to bring your own demo material in. pretty hard for a current set to look like sh*t with a hi-def feed.

if you can swing the $$, test a Mitsubishi DLP which, the Diamond Series anyway, has the best Texas Instrument DLP setup in any set, but they're a little more $$.

One more thing, there were alot of Samsun DLP models that have a known sound delay problem when playing games on PS2's. obviously it will not delay if you run your sound from the PS2 straight to your receiver.
