I think stealing physical shit and numbers should be categorized differently, it’s not really stealing it’s copying.

No, it just shows a 'fraps' capture of some basement nerd googling 'elitetorrents dot org' browsing the movie collection, highlighting the date on the star wars III dvd rip, and opening it with videolan client. Then the fbi logo cuts in a second later.

OMG FOR OLD TIMES SAKE!!!! WE SHALL REMEMBER LEETTORRENTS WITH THIS FOREVER!

Winner. Piracy, stealing, and theft are all grossly innacurate substitutes for copyright infringement. It doesn't make it right, but I would argue it makes it "less wrong" than outright stealing. What's funny is if you think of the penalty for getting caught shoplifting a CD as opposed to getting caught downloading (I know, technically uploading) music. Which is worse, Petty theft or Copyright infringement and intellectual property thievery!

I blame the media. :icon25:

But isn't it the same thing?

If you depend on the sales of your work to pay your debts, then how isn't stealing online wrong?

Just because someone took the movie and digitized it doesn't mean it's any different than going in the store and stealing the tape.

yeah problem is, when you "steal it onilne" the charges are way worse.. if you get caught in a store, its nothing, you pay a small fine and do 5 hours community service.. but online they try to fine thse people for 1000s of dollars..

its fucking wrong..

Not that I agree with the difference in punishment, I could see how they would view them differently. When you steal it online there is a higher probability that it will be shared. Chances are that the ones who shoplift them probably don't have the knowledge or equipment/service to rip/distribute them.

disclaimer: This is based solely on opinion, not on any kind of survey or fact.

Why can't these cheap fucks just buy the shit?
I guess the quality of ripped (and by this I mean illegal copies of movies that are still in theatres..not DVD rips) movies must have improved, because the only ones I ever saw were from a couple years ago and looked like dogshit - even the ones my friend, who was some sort of SVCD whore, would tell me were just below DVD quality. Grainy, ugly shit.

I guess I can see the desire to download movies not out on DVD yet...but otherwise, just go buy the fucking thing.

well it is actually. when someone steals a cd from a store, that means loss of potential sales for the store, and they have to replace it.
when you download it - copy it - the original is still in the store. granted they'll still lose one potiential sale, but they can still sell that original copy.

its not right, but it certainly isnt the same. and as soap said, getting caught shoplifting wont get you into jail with a 3000 dollar bail

copied dvds are exactly the same as the originals nowadys. but i agree. its only $20 ffs. go out and buy it.

ofcourse there are people that download 183 movies a day, which is undoubtetly cheaper than buying them all, but those people prolly dont watch those movies anyways. 'OMGLOL i downloaded another 1337 movie Babe goes to the city omglol rox0r" :dork:

What cracks me up about this whole thing is that it's simply a matter of volume. When people were recording songs off the radio to tape, no one gave a fuck. Now that a large number of people can download music and movies, the powers that be care all of a sudden.
Me, I don't d/l movies. I have Netflix and a DVD burner. I feel that I've paid for the movie, so I should be able to watch it as many times as I want.
As for games, I think that they're too expensive in general, but if it's a good game, I will buy it. Especially if I want to play it online. I'm not paying $50 for a turd in a pretty box. If the developers lose some cash, well, that should teach them not to make shit games.

Theirs websites like vcd-q... that have ratings on how good the releases are, people rate them by video/audio and are nuked by the scene (the warez scene) if their no good. Generally cams aren't very good with tinny sound, but most of the time a telesync willbe released not long after the theare release which is a copy from the cinema rolls, i.e. very high quality. Theirs also screeners which are a copy of the dvd that gets sent to critics etc, it just has text over it at times like 'property of xxxxxxxx'', but software today can actually rip that out.

So yea, they've come along way since a few years ago, and SVCD is generally shit anyway because it further compresses things.

Also I want to mention the whole mentally of MPAA and RIAA is stupid, if someone downloads a movie or a song they treat it as a “sale loss”, which is complete bullshit because 75% of the people would have never bought the movie or the music. RIAA even considers 1 song downloaded as a CD sale loss, 1 fucking song! They report these bloated numbers as if they are loosing billions but in reality it’s far less, ofcourse there is some negative impact but not even close to what they claim. It’s there fault for offering such high prices and producing such shitty content for the most part.

Also as far as TV shows, you can tape them or even record them using your computer. Greedy ass industry is trying to stop this too, they aren’t even loosing money. I mean who would cancel their television service and replace it with torrents? No one really would, it’s just missed or older shows that you cannot find anywhere else, it’s there fault they don’t provide DVDs for all the shows, I watched all the family guy episodes from my computer because I missed a number of them, but afterwards I still went out and bought the DVDs because I liked the show. And no one pays attention to most commercials unless they are good, if it’s a good commercial people will want to see it. You have sites offering funny or original commercials for download no one seems to care about that.
